Unhappy Gone too soon

A few months ago, we said goodbye to our little Russian Dwarf, Bobbi. She was missed by everybody and my son in particular wanted another hamster, so at the end of August, we welcomed a lovely Syrian hamster, Pamela into our home. She was such a lovely little thing and we all loved her to bits. Sadly, on Saturday morning, I found that she had died. She was only about five months old. I’m shocked and devastated. She seemed fine on Friday and can’t believe that she has gone so young. I heard a noise in the house last night and for a moment thought it was Pamela on her wheel. Missing her terribly.

I am so so sorry to hear this.

Pamela may have had an underlying illness no one could have known about. Sometimes hamsters die young and unexpectedly of unknown causes which is no consolation to you and your family.

You could get a hamster from a rescue or adoption center, one that has already lived for a few months and is in need of a good and loving home.
Or check the small ads at Gumtree if you are in the UK. I always feel so sorry for the poor unwanted hamsters advertised for sale because people buy them then want to get rid of them.

I have two adopted ones myself and one who i bought as a pet shop baby. They are all different species with their own characteristics.

You could even adopt two in two seperate cages of course providing you have the space. Just a thought.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. It is very hard to lose a young hammy but sometimes it is just they they were born with something not quite right that gave out suddenly.
Run free at the bridge Pamela and little Bobbi too. x

I definitely agree that there are many wonderful hamsters looking for a home and even if it is an older one, giving him or her a wonderful home for the latter part of their life is a great thing to be able to do.

I am very sorry. This is sadly quite common on here and as the others say they can be born with some genetic defect. It may be to do with mass breeding or just bad luck. But it is always terribly sad for an owner when the hamster is so young. Little Pamela won't have known much about it and is now at the rainbow bridge playing free.

I would get a hamster from a different place next time if you can. It isn't always a pet shop thing but the hamsters maybe haven't had the best start. Our first syrian was from a small local pet shop that used their own breeder and he was big and healthy and lived a long time.

See if there are any small pet shops near you or look on Gumtree - there are often people wanting to rehome a hamster of only 3 months or so when a child has got bored. I have never had much success finding one on Gumtree but depends what area you live.

But do get another one - it really helps to get past this and see one grow and see them through middle age and old age and watch them grow in confidence and them bond with you.
