How to cope with loss of a much loved hamster
Hi all. First time post and it’s not a happy one. Our little Russian dwarf Bobbi died a few days ago and I can’t believe how much I’m missing her and the little things she used to do. I have three teenagers and they are coping way better than me. I’m sure in time I’ll feel better and fondly remember her, but right now I’m in bits and it doesn’t take much to set me off crying. We buried her in the garden and planted something there at the weekend.
She was about 20 months old, which I guess is about average lifespan? She seemed fine last week, but when I came home from work on Friday she was lying twitching in the bottom of her cage. I picked her up and held her and she died about half an hour later. I keep beating myself up wondering if there was a sign that she wasn’t well that I missed. The only thing I had noticed was that she bit me quite hard a few times recently. She hadn’t done that since we first got her.
Although she was small, she has left a big hole in my life.
RIP little Bobbi. I’ll miss her.
Sorry for this sad post. I’m hoping someone who’s been through this can offer some advice
Thanks
Trev

Re: How to cope with loss of a much loved hamster
Dear Trev my heart goes out to you. I am always devastated whenever one of our pets die. Hams are only little but are so full of personality that they leave such a big whole. They all have their own quirky ways. My darling Boris died in my hands in August last year. My experience is that you have to give yourself time to grieve. It’s ok to be upset. It was good that you were there for Bobbi at the end. She wasn’t alone and you should take comfort from that. It took me until March this year to feel I could get another ham and now we have little Boo who is the funniest thing and is a joy. I still miss Boris every day but I remember the good times and his special little ways. Take it one day at a time and it will start to feel better. X

Re: How to cope with loss of a much loved hamster
Hi Charlie.
Thanks for your reply it really helps. I know there are many people out there who have experienced the pain I am feeling and I know in time it will get better, but for now it's still a difficult thing to deal with. I found it hard this evening at the time I would usually go and spend some time with her. You are right. They may be small but they certainly have big personalities.
Take care
Trev

Re: How to cope with loss of a much loved hamster
I’m so sorry. Just last Memorial Day, after celebrating my early birthday at an amusement park, I came home to see my Destiny in her favorite hiding spot. I cried so hard when I realized she wasn’t breathing. Destiny was a Russian dwarf, too. She died suddenly, at the young age of six months. It still hurts, but I’ve found ways to move on. And as I move on, she'll be with me. Not running up my arm or biting my finger, in memories. I think Bobbi was an amazing hamster and I wish I could have met her! Don’t worry. It will stop hurting. I promise. Just think about something else. At first it will be hard. But gradually, the frown on your face will turn into a smile.
-Your friend, Allison.

Re: How to cope with loss of a much loved hamster
Hi Trev
I am sooo very sorry for you loss, I also lost my precious WW (Violet) not too long ago in March 2019....so I truly can understand how you must be feeling.
I don't remember crying so very hard when I 1st discovered that she'd passed and I actually had her cremated the next day cos I don't have a garden that I can lay her to rest in.
Honestly, I never felt so much sadness as she was my 1st fur kid and brought me soooo much joy, laughter and tears(at the end). It was really unimaginable, but I take comfort that she is having loads of fun at the 'Rainbow Bridge' now but I do miss her so.
Strange (but true story), I didn't get to grieve as long as I wanted or needed to....as my Dad kinda went and bought another hammie for me (without my knowledge) just a few days later and I was so mad. But, it all turned out well and I am so glad to have Humphrey (LH Syrian Boy) in my life now.
Hope this helps alittle....you will surely feel better soon but these little fur balls will forever live in our memories and hearts.
Cheers!

Re: How to cope with loss of a much loved hamster
Thank you for the kind messages. It does help when others who have experienced what I feel give their support. Over the past couple of years I've had a lot of stress to deal with, but one thing that never failed to bring me happiness was spending a bit of time with Bobbi. She was a comfort to me.
My heart goes out to those who have lost their little loved ones.
Take care
Trev

Re: How to cope with loss of a much loved hamster
Trev, you have so much love to give and there are hamsters out there desperate for a good home.
Have a look at the small ads, Gumtree, adoption and rescue centres and make a little hamster happy.
Bobbi's happy memories will always be with you and no hamster will ever replace her.

Re: How to cope with loss of a much loved hamster
It is so hard. I ended up contacting the Blue Cross per bereavement service. They really helped. You can email them and they understand and seem to have the right words and suggestions.
I don’t think we really stopped feeling sad about the loss of our hammy until we got another one. It doesn’t replace them - they have different personalities anyway - but a new baby hamster makes you laugh and they need you. One of the hard things is not having a hammy to care for daily so it helps. Maybe when the time is right you will find another hammy who needs you.
