I am so sorry for your loss. I understand how hard it is to lose your beloved, no matter if it is a hamster or something else. Hugs and blessings from me and Hamper to heal your shattered heart.

Thanks mangoandmimi, Scarlett Empress and BubbyandHamper. He was a very brave boy and I'm so proud of him for being so strong despite his illness.

I received a call this morning from the vet practice to say that Custard's ashes have come back and I can go and pick them up. It was a phonecall I was expecting but was still very upsetting. It might sound a bit stupid but I almost feel scared at the thought of going to collect his ashes. It just seems so final and the idea of him being handed over to me in a little cardboard tube is heartbreaking. He was such a lovely little friend to me and I'm sure it will bring me some comfort to have him home again but it's still hard. I suppose I don't have to go in today but at the same time maybe putting it off just delays the inevitable and doesn't make things any easier when the time comes to do it.

Custard's keepsake box arrived today and I have already found a special place for it, with his well-chewed whimzee crocodile and little velvet bag inside. I would like to include a poem about the rainbow bridge as well but wasn't sure whether his ashes will be returned with one or not so will just have to wait and see.

I am so very sorry to hear about you loss of Custard. I can completely understand how you are feeling. I also like to keep a memory box of my hamster things to remember them by. Custard was so privileged to have such an amazing owner to spoil and love him.

That phonecall today must have been upsetting as it reminded you of him but at least with his memory box he will forever be with you.

Run free at the bridge Custard.

I remember getting that phone call not so long ago regarding Master Harvey's ashes, I cried when I got them home. I've found having his ashes has helped, it's been a comfort knowing he's home with me. You will find that too hammy. XXX

I'm so sorry for your loss of Custard He was a wonderful strong ham for fighting through his illness for so long. He had such an amazing owner who cared for him and loved him so very much. It must have been upsetting to receive that phone call about Custard's ashes. The memory box is a lovely way to keep his memory forever. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time. Many hugs.

RIP Custard xxx

Thank you SKB and livedinhogwarts. It means a lot to have so much support on here from people who know exactly what you're going through.

Thin Lizzy- youre right, it really is comforting for him to be home again where he belongs. The ashes came back in a scatter tube so I had to move them into a little bag before they could go in his velvet pouch for the keepsake box. That was very hard to do but I did feel much better afterwards knowing he was in his little resting place.

****************

When I went to the practice to pick up Custard's ashes the vet was out in reception so I had a quick chat with her about Custard. She was sad to hear that he passed away so soon after his treatment but we both agreed that it was probably his time to go and he fought so admirably to the very end he deserves to rest peacefully now. I managed to stay composed but did have a bit of a cry when I got him home. His ashes are now in his little keepsake box in a velvet bag with his whimzee chew.

On Sunday I cleaned out his cage and packed away all the things to keep for the future like his wheel, any unused toys, food bowls etc. There was suddenly such a big space in the room when his cage was packed away it was quite emotional to not see it there. Although a sad reminder I think it was a comfort to have it there because everything appeared to be normal and as it has been for the past 3 years; it's a very strange experience.
I've been watching some of the videos I took of him and that has really helped to remember all the good times we had together.

Cleaning & moving the cage is always a wrench, the empty space is hard to get used to but it does get easier with time.
I'm glad the videos have helped, you have so many memories to cherish & take comfort in now, Custards keep sake box with his whimzee is something special to cherish & bring you comfort too.

Hammy, I'm so pleased you've found comfort having Custard's ashes home, the emotions come and go and can hit you hard, remembering happy times will help you get through this difficult time. It always helps when you've got a caring vet who understands.

I'm so sorry for your loss of your beloved Custard. He was an amazing heartham to you, and he fought so bravely to stay with you for as long as possible. The two of you had such a loving and trusting bond with one another, and he was truly lucky to have such a devoted and pampering mum like you to do everything humanly possible to help him through all of his health problems. He lived a happy, long, and fulfilled life with you and no ham could have asked for more. I know how heartbreaking it must be for you to have received the phone call that his ashes were ready for pick up, to pass the baby food aisle in the grocery store, and to be in a room filled with absolute silence. You loved him so dearly and completely so it will take time to heal your broken heart. I am glad that he is home with you once again and you have his lovely memory box, videos, and pictures to help ease your pain. I will be praying that the memories of him and your special love for one another will give you comfort during this time. He was greatly loved and will be remembered always. Huge hugs to you. We are here for you.

RIP, sweet Custard. You were an exceptional ham and deserve peace and fun at the Bridge. Please send an extra special rainbow to your loving Mum who loves and misses you so.
