Default Aurora...

It feels too soon to be writing this. I know you were older when I got you, little one, but you were so strong. I thought we'd have more time together.

I first met you when I went to pick up the only baby of yours that hadn't left you: Speedy. He was a runt--a third of the size of his eight week-old siblings, and you were so tender with him. I felt a pang of guilt when I took Speedy home, for how could I leave such a gorgeous hamster behind in a tank of around 30 by 20cm? I only hoped someone loving would come along and snap you up.

But that didn't happen. A month later, and Speedy was gone. I tried by best with that little man, but he was so, so weak. But I knew what I had to do: get you out of that pathetic house. So you came home with me.

Much like your baby, you were tame from the get-go, hopping onto my hand barely a couple of hours after I'd bought you home. Funny for a hamster who hadn't been held for four out of six months of her life. I think Speedy got that trait from you.

I didn't know what to call you. Thankfully, this forum was there to help. Aurora suited you perfectly, and sounded a lot better than "Speedy's Mum".

In the following 19 months you were a real personality. You destroyed tunnels and a wheel with that overexcited mouth of yours. You had the cheekiest little look on your face when you caught a whiff of some tasty human food and your teeth made quick work of a Zoozone 2. Through all of this, though, I don't think you ever bit me.

Your second cage was an Alaska. Much better. Aside from the fact you now had bars to chew and I spent almost six months trying every chew under the sun trying to get you to stop. Still, you were happier.

I was relieved when you stopped the bar chewing. I thought you'd finally grown out of that phase. Trouble was, you were older now, and less inclined to chew anything outside of food or bedding. Your teeth became too long.

Then I noticed you weren't acting like yourself. You weren't as active. You were grumpy and shy--two things I'd never known you to be in your life. So off to the vet you went.

She immediately noted the length of your teeth. It's something I should have picked up on, really. You were no longer acting like a gerbil, so of course they'd be longer than she should. A quick procedure to shorten them and I thought: hey, this is it! We found the problem. After she recovers from the anesthetic she'll be back to her old self.

But that didn't happen. You wouldn't touch your dry food, something you would do even when your teeth were too long. You only wanted red pepper, of all things. Everything else: baby food, other vegetables, porridge made with water--all things I knew you loved went ignored.

And then that changed again, and you began munching away quite happily. But that wasn't to last.

I was hoping I could make your passing a little easier. I knew it was the end on the night of the 22nd, and if you could just make it to the morning I could get you to the vets and give you some dignity. But you died in the early hours of the 23rd. My birthday. For two years in a row now, I've lost animals on my birthday.

I'm burying you today. Near where I buried Ben. Across from where I buried Speedy. I hope you guys find one and other.

I'm... not going to own any hamsters for a while. I've had at least one in the house since I was 12, but I've never lost more than one in the same month. I lost 5 animals in 365 days. I need to sit with this for a little bit.

Goodbye Aurora. 2 years, 2 months old. I hoped I'd have you for longer.

I love you, little one.

I'm so sorry to hear Aurora has gone to the bridge, I remember your posts about her well, she was a lovely girl & you must be so sad to see her go, she had a great life with you, we always wish they would stay a little longer but she did make it to a really good age & will now live forever in your heart.

It's so sad that you've lost a much loved fur baby on your birthday twice now, that must really hard for you *hugs*

Run free & play well at the bridge Aurora reunited with little Speedy once again.

I'm so sorry for your loss of Aurora. She was definitely a lovely and sweet ham. She will be greatly missed. I am also terribly sorry that you had two hams pass to the bridge on your birthday; that must be extremely difficult and painful for you. Take the time to heal and remember all the cherished memories that you created together. Aurora was truly lucky to have your love and care. Hugs to you, EnerHam; we are here for you. Rest in peace, Aurora. I will be hoping you are reunited with your dear Speedy at the Bridge and the two of you are having wonderful adventures together.
