Rest In Peace Honey
I'm very sad. My beautiful Syrian, Honey, passed away last Friday.
He had been slowing down a bit, and about a month ago he had diarrhea for one day, but it resolved and he was much better. Thursday I noticed that he didn't eat his food and didn't really want to drink. That day it was kind of cold in my house because something happened with the heat and it wasn't going on, but we fixed it. Honey had a very small heating mat under his cage to make sure he was warm though, or at least I hope so. I noticed he wobbled a bit when he walked, but he looked comfortable in the little fleece bed he loved to sleep in. He usually likes to eat in bed, and liked to keep his snacks within arms reach around the bed, but he didn't eat. I left cucumber near him in case he wanted to eat that, for fluids.
I had to go to work Friday, but I put a camera aimed at him so I could check him on my phone from work and if he wasn't better, I was trying to find a vet to take him to. I never got a chance because all day Friday he just slept in one spot in the corner, near where the heat mat was, but not in his favorite bed. I came home and looked at him, in the same spot and he was still breathing. I went upstairs to change and looked again, and he wasn't breathing anymore.
I couldn't believe he was gone. I put him back in his little bed and he felt very heavy. I put him back in his cage and kept looking at him that night, and Saturday. He looked so peaceful and like he was sleeping so I wanted to make sure he was really gone and not just in torpor. I know they say when they are in torpor they aren't stiff like when they die, but it was hard to tell. He didn't flop around when I picked him up with gloves and put him in his little bed. He just kind of stayed curled up. He never moved at all, and he definitely wasn't breathing and no whiskers twitching, nothing, so I finally believed he was gone. I buried him yesterday, in his little bed he loved.
I'm very sad but I'm glad he went peacefully. I wish I knew what was wrong with him though. Goodbye Honey. Play with Pumpkin at the Rainbow Bridge. You were a very good boy, as sweet as honey. This picture is from Petco the day I bought him.

Re: Rest In Peace Honey
So very sorry to hear of your loss of Honey. He was a handsome ham and I'm sure he had a wonderful life filled with all the love and care a ham could ever hope to have. Remember all the precious memories that you created together and know that he will live on forever in your heart. Hugs to you. RIP, Honey. May you find great adventures at the Rainbow Bridge. Please send an extra special rainbow to your mom, too. She loves and misses you so.

Re: Rest In Peace Honey
I am so sorry Honey has passed. It sounds like she was ready to go as they often abandon the nest and choose a place to die when they are ready. It sounds like it was her time and that is was quite peaceful. But it's hard and you must really miss her. She is playing free over the rainbow bridge now xxx
