Default Rest in Peace, my dearest Hubble

I am so sad to be making this thread. My Hubble passed this morning in the midst of an unexpected battle against wet tail (according to the vet), though I'm now wondering if it was something else. Regardless, he fought hard but decided it was time to go, heartbreakingly about an hour after I last checked on him and told him how much I loved him.

Today has been hard and harder than I expected. He brought so much joy into my life and was an absolute sweetheart of a hamster. He was so tame and so gentle, and I just hope I was able to give him as much happiness as he gave me.

Here's a video of his playpen antics, and it's the way I'll always remember him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VTSubWLa5o

So very sorry indeed Jen. Hubble was a lovely boy and I often wondered how he was during your absence. He had a long, happy and healthy life with you until his last days. I am sure he loved you as his wonderful Mum.
Play well at the bridge Hubble. X

So very sorry for your loss Jen.
Hubble was a lovely little ham, he lived to such a great age, it's so sad that he was so ill at the end but you did everything you could for him & I'm sure he appreciated all the love & care he had from you throughout his life & especially in his final days.

Run free & play well at the bridge Hubble.

Hubble looks a bundle of fun in your video, you're bound to miss him. You did your best to keep him healthy and comfortable at the end and I hope you feel better soon,

Thank you Serendipity, Coco, Josie, Cypher, and Ruth. It's amazing how much love we can feel for these wonderful little creatures. I have to admit I'm feeling a lot of guilt this morning. We had developed such a strong bond with Hubble. He trusted us without reservation. I fear we might have broken that trust in the final days with the syringing and trying to keep him clean. I just hope he knew we were only trying to help him.

Try not to feel bad Jen, I think they do know when we are doing things to help them & I'm sure he wouldn't have trusted you any the less for them.

I am sure he trusted you at the end. It seems instinctive for hamsters to reject syringes and other people cleaning them, which is understandable, but it was not you he was rejecting, but the processes. And as Cypher says, he knew you were trying to help him. Charlie got quite grumpy and angry in his last days at not being able to do things nd even crosser if I tried to help. But he knew I loved him because I told him as you did and they can sense it and hear it in your voice. So Hubble knew you loved him. It is just very hard when they can no longer be independent.

Guilt is a normal emotion when a pet dies. I found a really good article that helped me after Charlie died. It's in this thread

Pet loss - where to find help, tips and comfort on the loss of a pet.
