I know exactly what you mean the last hamster we had went unexpectedly, we found him in a weird "out of nest" nest he had made so we held him for an hour just crying and stroking him, hoping that he had gotten very cold for some reason and would come back even though we didn't really think this would happen.
I am so sorry you have lost your ham, but take comfort in the fact you loved them so much and they were surely very happy with such a caring owner.
