Smile Cost of a show hamster?

Hi there everyone, Im new to this forum but not new to owning hamsters

I have always wanted to show hamsters but Ive never had the confidence to until now!

I was just wondering roughly how much a well breed show quality Syrian or Dwarf hamster would cost?

I am happy to travel to get a the perfect hamster but does anyone know of a good breeder in the North Wales area?

Thank you
Jazz x

Hi Crittercrazy

I'm in north Wales and unless someone has set up since march, there are no breeders here unfortunately. I got my breeder hams (both dwarf and syrians) via a specialist pet courier as I don't drive so couldn't fetch them. Neither is there any shows around here to visit and buy from.

Its so frustrating that there are no shows in North Wales! We will have to set one up Wobbles! haha where abouts in North Wales are you?
I think I might end up having to do the same and get one via a courier which I really don't want to do. How much did the courier cost? is there any very good show quality breeders that you recommend that might have some hamsters for sale at the moment?
Thanks

Hamsters usually only cost about £8 at shows. I'm in mid-Wales and tend to drive to a few shows each year, so we see them then They are sometimes a bit difficult to reach without driving though

This is a list of all the shows this year, maybe look and see which are your nearest?

Wow I can't believe a show hamster usually only cost £8! The 'origin unknown' ones at my local pet shop are £10-£15! I will make it to a show, I will! haha I at that price I will end up coming home with 10! haha
I'm learning to drive at the moment so hopefully I will be able to drive myself but my grandad has said he might take me to a few...if I'm good haha

Thanks for that link, I will have a look now and hopefully I can get to one
xx

I know! Their spread out over England but there's none here, apart from Cardiff, which when your up the top, might as well be one of the mid England ones as its just as far away!. I'm in the bottom of the Snowdonia national park, so the north, but not as high up as Bangor, Conwy and Llandudno way

Courier prices vary, I paid £110 for a collection of two robos from west mids, then down to Cardiff for a Syrian, then bought up to me in the same trip, which considering the time and miles involved, wasn't a bad price! Especially as other places had quoted me £300+ The same company fetched me two dwarves from Luton in march, but it was only £55 this time, as I met them in Wrexham so they had less of a journey. If you want to go down that route I can get you a couple of courier details, off a site I'm on, that have excellent reviews, but if I wanted a courier again (as I no doubt will in the future) I would want the one I've used before, as they were truly wonderful in every way and I couldn't rate them high enough. Bear in mind if you do consider one, hamsters can only be transported up to 8 hours in a single run, so that might effect where you look.

As to the prices of hamsters, I've actually found breeder ones are normally cheaper than pet shop ones. My breeder Syrian was £6, a p@h Syrian is £9.50, so I'm not sure how that comes about. I not sure whether they'd actually have some right now, but the breeder I got my dwarves from breeds good quality showable hamsters, I got a wonderful winter white from them, and a very spirited campbell! I can give you their details if you want, so you can email them and enquire. Your best bet would be to look at the list of breeders on here, contact them to see what they have and if you deicide to, ask if they mind you using a courier to pick up the hamster. Just state you want the hamster for showing, so you get one of good type/standard and colour, otherwise, just like with buying a pedigree dog, you will get a pet quality hamster, nothing at all wrong with it, but it just won't measure up in the show ring because no decent breeder worth their salt will let a possible show winner be an average pet. I've got nethie dwarf rabbits like that, lovely and friendly, fit and sound, but they wouldn't stand a chance in the show world, so definitely tell the breeder that's what you want it for.

It's lovely up that way, especially on the sea front! I've not been to Colwyn for ages, I think the last time I was there I'd gone along the coast road, after stopping off in Conwy to see that tiny house!

You're welcome, I will pm you the details, I'm pretty sure giving out numbers and names on the open forum isn't allowed, so best play safe!
