Hello,

I'm sorry to hear about your fiance's cat (18 is such a good age though). Your new hamster is a Roborovski. Hopefully the vet visit went well. Robos are usually quite healthy hamsters.

A good housing option for a Robo is a glass tank. Since you are in the US, 40 gallons or bigger. Barred cages can work but need fairly narrow bars and I know large barred cage options are more limited in the US. Robos need at least 6 inches of bedding for burrowing, a sand bath, 8 inch/20cm wheel and lots of clutter (tubes, hides etc) rather than open space as they are skittish.

Hello and welcome to HC!
Your Robo looks so cute.

If you click on Forum top left then you will see a whole section on Roborovski hamsters with threads about this species of dwarf hamsters.

Click on Housing on the Forum and you'll see a thread called "Let's see your cages" to give you ideas about different set ups for your Robos upgrade.

A lot of us including myself have started off with small cages and learnt along the way how to improve our hamsters lives.
