Most young hamsters are skittish and need to settle in.
Did you get him from a pet shop? Just wondering why he has a chunk of ear missing but hamsters will sqabble when left together too long.
I think that your hamster's bin cage is too bare and needs to be furnished with Syrian sized items so he feels secure and comfortable. The shoebox house will help because now he has a place to build a big nest in, keep a hoard and maybe have a pee corner.
He'll need overhead cover, hides like a coconut hide, tunnels like a wicker tunnel or cork log but all has to be big enough for a Syrian. A bendy bridge leading to the house roof or used for shelter are useful. Hamster sized items from pet shops usually fit a dwarf hamster.
I think at the moment he feels exposed so wants out to find a place to hide. Hamsters are prey animals so get nervous when they have too much open space.
Did you put paper based bedding inside his house? They also love a big heap of torn into strips plain white toilet paper left outside their house for nesting material.
My hamsters like out of cage time in the evening but come back to me when they want to go back home and some are very reluctant to leave their cages because they like their cozy homes.
My advice would be to concentrate on getting his set up to suit him and then he should be happier, more comfortable and secure and not so keen on escaping.
If you can't get everything at once you can improvise with a clean Pringle tube, a flower pot on its side, a cardboard shelter etc
I would also get him a Whimzee to chew on.
