Soon To Be First-Time Hamster Mom
I have recently gotten my new 40 gallon breeder tank with an Imagitarium hinged screen cover. I have gotten in touch with a Rattery that has been breeding hamsters for three years and have placed a deposit down on a future litter. I have a trip to New York planned from January to the end of February so I’ll have to wait until I get back, but that just gives me time to set up the tank just how I want it. I’m really in love with natural/German styled setups. I just want the best possible enrichment for my future hamster and thought that joining this forum would help me learn things along the way while I prepare for my new hamster!
I guess my first question will have to be this. Is my 40 gallon breeder tank a good size to have for the Syrian I plan on getting? I know it’s floor space is about 648 inches squared and the minimum in the US is 450 inches squared from what research I have done.

Re: Soon To Be First-Time Hamster Mom
are you planning on getting a male or female? most syrians won’t be happy in a 40 gallon breeder, i have a dwarf who is happy in it and there are always special cases but i wouldn’t count on it, you’ll very likely need to upgrade.

Oh dear. That is very disheartening to hear for the fact that I can’t upgrade due to my current living situation, and unfortunately the only hamster breed that the breeder adopts out is Syrian. Perhaps I shouldn’t venture into owning a hamster and should think about cutting my losses on the deposit I put down for a baby.

What are the dimensions? I think it probably would be on the small side for a Syrian but knowing the actual dimensions would help to be sure.

Re: Soon To Be First-Time Hamster Mom
The tank that I purchased was the Aqueon 40 Gallon Breeder Tank. The Dimensions are 36.25"L x 18.25"W x 17"H.
And sorry for not seeing this before, but I was also interesting and getting a male Syrian and asking the breeder to match me with their calmest most laid back personality if at all possible.

Re: Soon To Be First-Time Hamster Mom
That's big enough for a Syrian!
My Syrians live in the Alaska and Hamster Heaven cages which are slightly smaller and no one has ever said that they are too small. I have never seen any stress behaviours either.
It is not all about size, the personality of the hamster needs to be taken into consideration as well and most importantly enrichment.
This tank is big enough to accommodate a large wheel and house plus plenty of enrichment.
Have a look on the thread "Let's see your cages" on the Forum under Housing for ideas.

Re: Soon To Be First-Time Hamster Mom
Really truly? That’s a relief that someone here has a cage around my size and manages to have a stress free Syrian. I messaged the breeder whether my tank dimensions would be a downgrade for their hamsters and they said that it should be fine for the hamster I’m going to eventually get. So that was reassuring.
I do want to have plenty of enrichment in my cage plus a safe play area for them. I’d like to make a cardboard play-pen that I can sit in with them so they can run around and explore new things. I used to do this with my rats so I’m not entirely sure if Syrians would enjoy being taken out of their cage like that for a little extra exploration. I suppose it depends on the hamster.
I’ll go ahead and look at the thread you suggested right away. I’m excited to take a look.

Re: Soon To Be First-Time Hamster Mom
That sounds about the smallest I personally would go for with a Syrian, but it can work. You may just have to work on enriching the space and making sure the setup is really good and lots for them to do and explore. Once you get your hamster If you ever have any issues feel free to share your setup and there are always people willing to offer help and advice.
All my hamsters have enjoyed out the cage time, but like you say it can depend on the hamster.

Re: Soon To Be First-Time Hamster Mom
That is really nice feedback to hear. Then I will let the breeder know my limitations do they can help me find a hopefully suitable Syrian for such an enclosure and wish for the best while providing a lot of enrichment, like scatter feeding, foraging toys, lots of hideaways, plenty of bedding a nice big wheel, etc while also hopefully giving them time and space outside their tank if they’re confident enough for it.
Again, thank you so much for the feedback. This has helped me so very much.

A good place to have a look at those is the German forum 'Das Hamsterforum' and 'Gehegevorstellung' is the section for setups.
