Default Hello there! I'm new!

Hi everyone!

I'm new. I do not currently own a hamster, but I'm looking into ownership in the near future. I'm looking around and joining communities and groups so that I can find answers to questions or find more information.

I'm in my late 30's, and I'm married but no kids. I love animals, but due to previous homes and the amount of hours I used to work, I've been unable to own any pets. I thought a hamster might be right for me since my husband and I are both collectors and we're worried that dogs or cats might knock down or destroy things.

Other that I work as a graphic designer and web developer (mostly front-end), but I do a lot of art-related stuff on the side for fun and extra money. I previously worked in retail management and it was hell, but I'm much happier now. I like video games (mostly jrpgs, but I play a lot of animal crossing). I also wear and collect Japanese street fashion. I'm learning how to make games and program them.

I'm basically a big kid who forgets they're getting older until things start to hurt.

Hello and welcome to HC!

I love your Avatar. Now you need to design a hamster one.

It sounds like a hamster would be a good pet for you and your collection will stay safe as well.

There is a thread on the Forum under Housing called "Let's see your cages" where you can get ideas about set ups.

Hello tehrinny and welcome to the forum. It is always pleasing to read responsible pet owners learning about pets before diving in and getting them.

If you cant find the answers to your questions just make a post about it, there are some very knowledgeable hamster owners on here who will help you out.

Hiya, what a great bio, you sound like a fun future hamster parent. this is a great community, I’ve learnt so much from this group. My advice would be to find an exotics vet before you need one (hopefully you never will) and also to research where you will get your hamster, personally I would avoid the ‘pet shops’ and look for a young hamster in a rescue, or ethical breader for your hamster, if you have everything ready you can sometimes find no longer wanted pets on advertising sites and it’s lovely to be able to offer one a forever home . I look forward to reading all about your search and preparations

Thanks! Before the pandemic, I did pet art at some pet stores as well as different events. This was one of the pieces I did for it (a friend, one of the store managers bunnies). But I don't have any hamster art yet. I'm waiting to get mine before I do it.

I'll keep that in mind!

I actually called around and there's a local exotic vet within a 10 minute drive. I'm about 30-40 minutes away from a reputable ethical breeder (on the CHA list) so I'll be going with them. I'm a little worried about adoption. Normally, I'd go to a shelter for any pet, but hammies can have so many health issues due to backyard breeders or rodent mills. I feel safer about owning one with healthier genetics, at least for my first one. Once I feel more comfortable, I might consider adoption.
