Re: Our Rory
Rory will be 2 in a couple of weeks.
I have an unopened bottle of dog metacam so won't need a prescription. Just undecided whether it would be a good idea or not. Some nights he has these bursts of energy and runs around and other nights he looks rough but still wants out, then sits under the helmet eating seeds.

Re: Our Rory
On second thoughts, self medicating is a bad idea and not something i'd advise anybody to do.
I'm going to email the vet and see what they say. I may have to take him in for a quick check up so they can work out the correct dosage if they think metacam may help Rory through old age.

Re: Our Rory
I thought it was a great idea actually! I was just surprised you could get hold of it without the vet prescribing! It sounds to me, at his age, like he would benefit from it, and why cart him all the way to the vets and stress him out if you have some. Dosage is a point though - it's worked out by their weight. Usually somewhere between 0.1 and 0.3 for a Syrian depending on weight but there is some leeway in the dosage. I think it was 0.2 usually for ours. Pickle was on 0.3 but he was particularly large.

Re: Our Rory
I know the first vet I ever saw said Charlie should have it because he was 2 and who knows what aches and pains he had and she liked to keep them comfortable. My current exotic vet is a bit sergeant majorish about meds. Which is slightly annoying.

Re: Our Rory
Henry was on 0.1ml but he had lost quite a bit of weight. I have an unopened, in date bottle left from Ozzy and my vet is fine with it. Her attitude is similar to your first vet.
I've started him on 0.1ml tonight as a maintenance dose. He licks it off a piece of Shreddie and then eats the Shreddie.

Re: Our Rory
Aw - I'm sure it'll help keep him comfortable. They can even get arthritis or toothache in old age and as we know, hide things.

Re: Our Rory
Rory has his Metacam on a little porridge now. I put it on a tiny lid which he pulls into his house.
Rory had a walk in a wheel tonight which is good to see.

That is a great idea to put the metacam in his porridge.

Re: Our Rory
The old man is checking out his bungalow.
Time had come to level things out so everything is within easy reach.
