Default Ninja Mod "re" introduction & Boromir memorial

Hey all!

Ninja mod here! Have been on this forum, wow, 10 years! Have made many lifelong friends, some remain online, some I've met and some have become like family (hamily!)

I tend to linger rather than post but when I do start posting find myself repeating quite a lot so little update.

Personal life..had some bad relationships but stronger from them. Staying spinster lady for a while!

Have lost my jobs working in education & museums thanks to covid so a lady of leisure at present.

Big life exciting news though, I bought my first house...a week after lockdown! downsized from my mouldy, dark, overpriced rental I was in for 10 years.. it's a 2 bed modern terrace in a "posh" private cul-de-sac... im the youngest here, most are retired but lovely and friendly. It's a very green area with lots of large trees (one of those protected tree schemes) and only 20 minutes from city centre and 10 minutes from my last place... but no noisy students!

Has been hard to get most things with lockdown like broadband and whitegoods but I have started spray painting lots of old furniture and getting crafty with what I already had and best of all, I have a garden! Ive become quite the bird watcher and even have a little pond (that needs cleaning!). It's been wonderful and scary at same time as Ive been shielding so haven't had any new house parties or even my family come visit. But making the best of it. I have several squirrel that like to come trash my bird feeders but I look forward to their visits. Slowly starting out with gardening, though I don't find it very relaxing like most people tend to!

I continue to focus more on rats in my pet keeping, I currently have 5. I do still have Boromir hamster who some of you may remember

Boromir: The elusive hamchild (Decisions! Who to welcome home)

He remains quite a shy fellow but he is coming out a bit more and getting a little bit of a diva, I find him sat at the door at 3am expecting to come out chewing at the bars! His fur is like velvet and he doesn't have any muscle wasting...can't believe he is 2 and a half! He will let me smoosh him and cuddle but he isn't really a fan of it..ive come to love him in his special way..his nails started to curl but ive developed a rather intricate way to cut them and am quite proud of myself! He sleeps lots but the fresh veggies are always gone by morning so I know he's ok! He doesn't chew anything and doesn't like anything being changed in his cage.. I feel guilty at times I don't get him out much or put lots of new things in but he isn't bothered and seems quite a happy chappy! He'll probably be my last hammy but I still love the fluff butts!

So that's me! I'm trying to catch up who is around and who is new,

Hope everyone is well, keep safe x

He always looks grumpy!

Aw lovely to have an update and good luck in your new home - it sounds lovely. Sorry to hear about losing work - it has been an awful few months with lockdown. As for men - has a few problems myself over the years and very much enjoyed being single for a few years. Then just when you’re enjoying it another drops on you from nowhere

I just read back through Boromir’s thread- he is amazing for his age! We also have a rescue ham now, Moo. And another Syrian from one of Souffle’s litters - who is adorable and 235g!

Aww lovely! I introduced a friend to a custard ham and they do seem good healthy chunks of gorgeousness!

It was so weird reading back through his thread, he certainly gave me the run around then! I honestly wasn't expecting him to make the move with me and didn't really plan anywhere for him to go lol It's getting to that point now though where it seems he is eternal! He's the last of my lord of the rings crew.. im onto greek names with my ratties now... and find it ironic that Boromir was the sean bean guy who always dies early lol

Ive had to scale back my new furniture and house improvemnet plans so I have laminate all downstairs.. .its good for boromir though, he bombs it in his ball! I can't let anyone free range on my stairs though as they are open plan through my lounge and dont have a rail..it's my biig save up spend, ive nearly fallen over them a few times!

Ive managed to paint some walls though so it is feeling more like "mine" and the spray painting things has felt like ove had new furniture. Lots of my furniture is in storange in Wales though so seems pointless to try unpack my boxes of clothes as I havent anywhere to put them.. but as others have told me, I have plenty of time, im just at that stage where I feel im not "contributing" now.. I dont know how id have coped though if i had been stuck in my dark mouldy rental.. my garden has been such a lifesaver here mentally.. my bills are already much much cheaper, its 8.30pm and i still dont have to put a light on! My lounge backs onto my garden with patio doors and is south facing so its always light.. not quite used to it!

As for the men, keep telling myself I wouldnt have this gorgeous little house if he was still around... and I can do whatever I want with it!

A decade contributing to the forum is quite an achievement, well done. My first impressions as a newish member of the forum is that it is a very pleasant place to learn and chat about pets. This can only be down to the vibrant community thats built up here over time and the work the admins and moderators have done keeping everything organised. Cheers

It is a friendly place MyHamsterAdventures . Amethyst - how are you Souffle’s hamchild? Are you related?

It takes a long time to fully get sorted in a new house- and yes there‘a no rush. It takes a while to organically decide where things should go and how you want it to be. I’ve been in this house over 3 years now and a lot of my clothes are STILL in a makeshift wardrobe downstairs. Did finally get a new wardrobe for upstairs but it’s still in its flat pack box waiting to be put together. Rome wasn’t built in a day

That's lovely to hear, thank you We haven't been without our drama but without being biased, I always feel this is a safe, non judgemental space to post my pet issues

Heheh no no, although she has become someone I regard on the level of family. Over all my years hear, Souffle has supported and helped me out not just in hammy world but "real life" also.. she has become a bit of a mummy figure and so aptly named "Hammy mummy" that has kinda stuck over the years

That made me chuckle, Ive had a bookshelf in my porch for several weeks in the box still flat packed..partly because it is too heavy to move and partly lack the motivation to make it up! I find I unpack best when in the "mood" though, and when it takes I get loads done so im not forcing it now and if it happens, so be it. COme September when I would have been returning to work, Im going to try be stricter and look at sorting the house as my "job" and keep work hours too.. whether that will actually happen mind..

The weather got a bit much Tuesday for us all. I have Boromir upstairs in my spare room and it's south facing. The curtains were closed but upstairs seemed as hot as down no matter what I did. I went to take him a strawberry and he was a bit hot but seemed ok, put some chilled water in his bottle.

However, when I went to check again , he was stuffed in his wicker tube and panting quite a lot and looking very wet. I coaxed him out and he was wobbly. I gently syringed cool water to him and then a grape and he went back into his house.

In the evening it hadn't cooled but he looked much better (and drier!) so I let him have a little run and moved his cage to my hallway...so now I have a cage on the laminate floor (cooler) in my tiny hallway but it's at the front of the house which is on the north side, dark and luckily the old man got through it..woth the inconvinience!

Phew!

I went to homebase to try buy some slate or terracota tiles and they had one ilse and all glazed ceramix.. so we'll just have to keep doing out best
