Default First post - Newbie

Hi everyone, just a quick post to introduce myself. Me and my son have a hamster and are looking to communities like this one to learn and interact with other hamster enthusiasts.

We like to take pictures and videos of our syrian hamster. Just recently my son has been watching loads of hamster maze videos on YouTube and he wants to build some together to watch with his friends online. I would love to hear from other people who have built mazes or puzzles for their hamsters.

Hi & welcome to the forum

I haven’t really done that kind of thing, just used tubes, hideouts boxes etc in a playpen, if you have any questions about how to make something that’s a safe form of enrichment for your ham then I’m sure someone will be able to help.

Hello and welcome and looking forward to hearing about your and son's hamster adventures! I have seen some of those videos on youtube as well - they look great fun. How old is the hamster and how old is your son? Assume the hamster is already quite tame and handleable.

Cardboard boxes and tubes are your friend for creating mazes and obstacle courses etc. Cardboard is your friend generally with hamsters! A shoe box makes a very good house/nesting box where they can build a big nest and pringles tubes make good tunnels for the cage (or for a maze).

Our hamsters have a playpen area with toys in for out of cage time (sometimes they are allowed to free roam the hamster-proofed living room but that can have its anxieties!).

Also have a look at the hamster photo competition this month - you and your son might enjoy taking some creativity for that topic for photos . There is a different topic every month.

Hi and welcome.

I have built a couple of hamster safe mazes out of recycling. The first one was when I got My syrian Luna, I basically just stuck a load of boxes together with pva glue, I just cut big enough holes out of the different shaped boxes and lined them up, I kept adding onto it every time I got a new shaped box.

Another one i have used was just a box that came with partitions inside already so I just cut holes in some of the partitions and placed treats inside it.

I just went and looked and found a video I did of it - I called it my rubbish maze!!!

The 3rd one I have made is actually coming out on my youtube channel in a couple of weeks. So this is a sneak preview
It is basically a roller skate box, I laid the top and the bottom of the box out on the floor and connected with tunnels and added a sandbath section and different substrates with different recycled boxes and egg cartons and I placed treats for my syrian Twinkle to find.

I use them when it is free roaming time.

Mine are not anywhere near the epic ones you see online, I just wanted to make a safe one out of recycling.

One word of advice in case you were not aware, a lot of the hamster mazes online use those little plastic balls, they are not safe for your hamster, just replace it with different types of bedding or tissue/toilet roll strips. It will still be fun but just safer for your hamster.

I hope you share pics/videos of what you end up making.

Hi, our hamster is 1 year old and has been extremely tame ever since we first got him. My son is 7 and has watched hamster YouTube videos for the last couple of years. There is a lot more to it than when I first told him we could make some, from ensuring everything is safe, camera settings (so the video is not blurry), to uploading, etc.

I'll check out the hamster photo competition, that sounds fun, although our Buster wont win any prizes for cuteness lol

Hi, I just checked out your video, I love the colour of Sunny. Although I read the comment about having to say goodbye to Sunny its great that a video of her will be helping people in the future, good job

My son has aspirations to make some of the epic videos that you see on Youtube, we managed one so far that had a card theme with every level being a different suit - Playing Card Maze

I will certainly be checking out some of your other videos and subscribe to future ones.

Aww thanks, Sunny was lovely, but gone too soon.

Your video and maze is brilliant, what an awesome idea to do it out of cards. Maybe just look into swopping the big balls out for something a bit more hamster friendly. Even rolled up tissue into balls would be safer. I love how he stuffs his pouches with all that stripy paper, he wasn't leaving that behind was he.

It's great your son is being so creative A year old is a really nice age - they are quite mature and confident at that age and not showing signs of aging until over 18 months to 2 years really.

I have a Hamster youtube channel as well No maze videos though unfortunately - the odd funny one on there though.

I am sure your hamster will be very photogenic for the comp! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder ha ha. Character and quirkiness is also nice, not just cuteness.
