Hi everyone, I just got a little hamster boy yesterday. He is in a Savic hamster heaven and seems happy scurrying around exploring his new home. I have left him alone apart from a bit of gentle talking to him near his cage. Yesterday he didn’t seem too keen but today he came out of hiding to look at me and presumably listen to me. Later tonight or perhaps tomorrow I’ll offer him a treat through the bars. Then in another day or two I’ll try putting my hand in his cage. I don’t want to spook him too soon, but some people advise not leaving it too long or they can become reluctant to tame. Large as this cage is reckoned to be, I think he would be happier in a much larger cage. Any advice here would be most welcome.

Hi! It sounds like your hamster's happy. If you want a bigger cage you could make a big cage. That way you can chose exactly how big the cage is. But if your hamster seems happy I think the cage you have would be okay.

Congrats on your new ham!
Is he a Syrian? They do often need larger cages, the HH is fine as a starter cage, give him time to settle in & see how he goes regarding the space.

Hi to Chocomint and Cyper. Thanks for your messages. Its really good to have contact like this with hamster experts. My hammy - little no name, at present, although I tell him he is the chosen one! - seems happy enough, i.e. he isn't climbing up the walls or chewing the bars, as far as I know. I hardly ever see him now except for quick trips to the water spout. If I see him there I talk softly to him and he stops and looks at me for a bit and then just carries on drinking, then sidles off back go bed. One time he accepted a bit of carrot from me through the bars but other than that he doesn't come out until after I've gone to bed.I know he's up and about then because I can hear him in his wheel.I suppose its early days yet, he's only been with me 3 days.
Yes, although this cage is reckoned to be bigger than the minimum recommended size I agree, its probably ok for now but I can see he ought to have something much bigger. But what? I am self isolating elderly, not in a position to handle a large glass tank. Could possibly assemble a flat pack wooden paw hut or eco thingy (cant remember the name now!) or I'm looking at savic plaza. Not a great deal bigger than the hamster heaven - would it be worth it?
lots of questions. hope that's ok.

The savic plaza is quite a bit larger than the HH so that would be a good choice if you decide to upgrade, it is tall though so you need to put some additional shelves in, you can buy shelves & ledges online. There's a good review & some ideas on setting up that cage here. Savic Hamster Plaza review
There is also zooplus which is worth checking out, the Barney cage there is very popular too. https://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/small.../hamster_cages

Congratulations on your new addition, what have you called him?
The savic cage is bigger and like cypher said more ledges and a couple of rat tubes would be great for keeping your little one entertained.

Hi All, I've ordered a savic plaza, coming tomorrow. Then comes the fun part, setting it up with ledges, tunnels and toys etc . I'm thinking of sectioning off to put different kinds of floor covering, and different depths, for variety and so the wheel can stay free moving. Any advice welcome as always. There's so much to learn. I've had rats and mice in the past but these little critters seem much more complicated.
Still haven't really got a name for him, except Hammy, I think he likes that but cant be sure. He's gradually getting more comfortable with me but still doesn't want me to touch him. How am I going to get him to his new cage without upsetting him? I'm concerned if I wait for him to be happy with me picking him up we'll be waiting for ever before he can move in.

If you want to use different kinds of substrate that's fine as long as they're all safe, I wouldn't section areas off though as your ham needs to be able to burrow, the base of the cage needs to be filled up to the top, that will give a reasonable burrowing & nesting depth.
You can put the wheel on a shelf or on top of a large wooden flat topped house to keep it stable & free of the substrate, there's plenty of height with the plaza so that shouldn't be a problem.
Have fun setting it up!
