Default Dwight the Hamster

I got my russian dwarf hamster, Dwight, in November of last year. He is timid and speedy, and his bin cage is covered in stickers of Dwight from the office. I made an account because I plan to upgrade his cage to a bigger bin (55 gallon?). I may post pictures of him and his set up later, but it's nothing fancy. Just a 29 gallon bin with all of the toys and hides buried (because Dwight buries all of his things, only recently I got him to stop filling the wheel and water bowl with bedding).

Hello and welcome to HC!

You could put the wheel and water bowl on a platform or large house with a flat roof so Dwight can't fill it up with substrate. People could have a look and maybe come up with suggestions if you post a photo of Dwight's set up.

Haha! The dwafs do like to bury things. My dwarf's whimzees always disappear underground after day or so. Did you mesh the lid of the bin cage for ventilation? I'm only asking because i can't see a meshed window.
To avoid the sand bath getting burried and dwarfs usually love their sand, you could put it on top of an upturned plastic tub. That's what i did. I cut (smooth any rough edges with sandpaper) a couple of entrances in a plastic container and put my dwarf's water bowl on top of it. It doubles as a hide and he often sleeps in it.

Do you have a photo of Dwight?

I don't have any recent good quality photos (he's fast!), but here's one from late January.
His lid is cut with a reptile mesh lid zip tied to the hole.

To me Dwight looks like a Syrian hamster not a Russian dwarf. How big and heavy is he?

Sorry, but I agree with Ria, looks like a Syrian to me too, very cute. I love Dwight and the office too.

Ria P is definitely right - there's no way Dwight is any sort of dwarf species. He's definitely a Syrian.

Dwight is a lovely looking hamster and i'm looking forward to see more of him.

I also have a Syrian who is called Henry.

You were planning to upgrade Dwight's cage anyway and now you have a good reason to go ahead with it. Syrians need the same things as dwarfs just bigger. A big house or a shoe box house and a wheel of around 28cm are essentials.

Why did you think that Dwight is a dwarf hamster? Did someone sell him to you as a dwarf? Not that it matters, Dwight is a beautiful hamster and he's your lucky hamster.
