The SPCA that I adopted him from labeled him and his litter as russian dwarves. I got him as a little thing, so I suppose it looked plausible that he was a dwarf as a young hamster. I was wondering why he was so big!

I have ordered a 12 inch wheel and will be exploring my options for a bigger cage. I looked back at his adoption paperwork and it appears that the vet there described him as a "fully intact dwarf hamster", although that was actually before his balls dropped. So perhaps the vet mistook my baby syrian for an adult dwarf? I assume the vet was not a small mammal vet.

My Syrian lives in the Alaska cage from Zooplus which is a great cage and very reasonably priced, that's if you are in the UK.

I reckon the vet didn't know much and thought Dwight was a Russian possibly due to to the colouring, especially if they didn't know much about hamsters. You are not the first it has happened to, nor will you be the last At least now you know what you have and he is so cute.

I'm in the US, going to get a bigger bin for him today (4 feet long by almost 2 feet wide).
