No - he has the built in white house, and also a bowl he was climbing under. I could turn the Noah's ark upside down and take the lid off, then it would be about 25cm long without a base (to go under the shelf) which might be the most secure place for him.
He was up this morning and ate a treat off the flat of our hand for the first time, hurray!

That's fab that he's eating from your hand already!
The white house that comes with the Alaska is far too small for a Syrian. I took it out and gave it to one of my dwarfs. You could make a house from a shoe box. Cut out the base and an entrance big enough for a hamster with full pouches and use the lid as a removable roof. That way you can find out if he likes it without changing his set up.
