Default Little concern

When Leo wakes up about 10pm I put his play ball up to his cage door he goes in no problem, for about 20 min and then I put him in his play pen. That was up to Monday gone as usual I put his ball up to the cage door only for Leo to ignore it and return to his den, on Tuesday night the same I managed to get him to take a piece of cucumber from my hand and then back to his den.

Is their something I am doing wrong.

Is he a new hamster? He might not like the ball. They aren't very nice from a hamsters perspective. They can't use their senses that well when inside a ball. Have you tried just using a jug or big mug to transfer him from the cage to the playpen and see what happens?

My advice would be to chuck the hamster ball in the recycling bin, horrible things in my opinion.

You could put Leo in his play pen for a while if he's in the mood to come out of his cage. If you can't pick him up you could try to get him to walk into a mug or jug and lift him out that way.

Also, please keep in mind that a hamster usually wants a pee, wash and snack/drink after waking up and before he's ready ro come out of his cage. Hamsters don't always want to come out either. My Syrian often prefers to potter about in his house or cage and comes out to free roam (he doesn't like play pens) maybe once a fortnight.

Thank you for your reply, I have had Leo from the 12th January he was 11 wks old Leo had no problem before I even put the ball in the pen while he's playing ( or trying to escape), he will then go into his ball then into his cadge.

It's only the last couple of days he has not come to me when I open the cadge door, I will watch when he's up to see if anything is upsetting him. He's only small but he's given me a complex.....cheers.

Hi Ria P

When Leo wakes up its about 15min before I go to his cadge for Leo to come out, your suggestion of picking up is my how would you say my weakness l know how to pick hamsters up I have watched all the videos on YouTube, I am afraid he will get away with them being so small he could get any where.

He did escape once from his cage when I forgot to close it properly it took me two hours to get him back ( the little devil).

I have had Mocha with me for a little over 2 months (he his around 3 months old), and he had a week where he was all about coming out for adventures, but since then he has much less interest in it so I leave him be until he is ready to come out more again.
Perhaps behaviour comes and goes?

Is Leo a Robo?

If his behaviour is different from the way he normally behaves and you are worried about him I'd suggest that you pick him up and give him a health check to make sure that everything is alright. That's what i would do anyway.

Of course, you know your hamster better than anyone and yes, a hamster ball is fine and secure as a means of transport. I thought you let him run around in it.

Yes I would suggest giving him his space. They go through phases. Our last Syrian would come to the door if he wanted to come out but if he didn’t want to then nothing would persuade him! They tend to not like being picked up in their cage. You could try a tube instead of the ball for a change. See if he walks into it and lift him out that way but you’d need to keep your hands over both ends until he’s either put down in a box nearby or in the playpen.
