Talking Chinese Hamsters

Hi. I’ve just joined so wanted to say hi 👋.
I currently own Syrians and Dwarves but have been looking at Chinese hamsters lately. I’ve been told to ask on here for help finding a local breeder. Can anyone help? Thank you

Thank you, yes I’m in UK. Is the care of Chinese Hamsters same as Syrians? I’ve been told they’re more like mice

Chineseys do look a bit mouse like but they are still more like other hamster species but quite unique at the same time!
They can be more timid when new than other species but do tame well with patience & some can be very lively little things while others are quieter & more cuddly. They are all extremely fast so something to bear in mind when you begin handling if you are more used to the relatively sedate pace of a Syrian!
They are more agile than other hams & very good at climbing, they can use their tails to cling onto things & do seem to enjoy climbing too. They really love to burrow probably more than any other species too so need plenty of deep substrate to dig in.
They like lots of little hideouts as well as their main house & not too much open space in the cage.
I've found my Chinese to be very particular about their sand baths, they tend to ignore sand unless it's in something round like a salt pig then they love to lie on their sides & go round in circles!
They also require a dwarf specific diet which is a little different to a Syrian diet.
They can be prone to diabetes which is something you need to be aware of & avoid giving sweet foods like fruit, treats with honey etc.
If you have a look in the Chinese section of the forum you'll find lots of threads that might help give you a better idea of their character & care.
