Default Introduction and questions

Hi there
Firstly want to say what a great forum, very informative...
So I am the owner of Hammy, along with my 11 year old son.
We have had him a few months now and already have upsized his cage and realised that the cages that PAH sell are far too small !
So Hammy is a Syrian Teddy Bear and is quite shy around us both, he sniffs plenty and takes food and sits watching my son on his computer so is not scared but just isn't up for being handled too much.
So yesterday when he was having a little climb I noticed that his bum area was dark and on closer inspection looks like he may be a little constipated. I have bought a small pet carrier so I can clean with some warm water and get a better look at what it is. Last night he was running round as normal and in his wheel and he has been out this morning for his normal school morning stroke and goodbye. I have noticed that he hasn't eaten his nuggets food that I changed to ( he was seemingly fussy with the mix) but has eaten the food that I hide in his cage and the small bits of veg that I put in. I put some of the mix in this morning and he has eaten this. So my question is at what stage would I be looking at a vet visit?
He is fine in himself, the water bottle is working fine, the only thing that has changed is the food.
Any advice will be great thanks

Welcome to the forum! It's not really a concern that Hammy isn't keen on being handled too much - some hamsters just aren't. I wouldn't be unduly worried about the food issues either, although it's not a good idea to make any sudden changes to his diet. As long as he is eating and drinking, reasonably active and alert, he sounds fine. Just keep an eye on him in case his behaviour changes.

Hi & welcome to the forum.
I agree that it isn't really something to worry about if your ham isn't too keen on being handled, that may come with time, some never really enjoy it that much but most will to some extent as they get more used to you. Have you tried setting up a play pen with toys where you can sit in with him & just let him run around you & on you, this also gives opportunities for handling just for very short periods while he gets more used to you.
I would be a bit concerned by the change in diet, any diet change should be gradual to allow them to adjust to new food so he may be having a problem related to that, pellets aren't really a suitable food for a hamster, they need variety in their diet & should be able to forage for food, which mix were you using? Picky eating is usually only a problem if the mix isn't that good.
I would just monitor him for now & see how he goes but if you continue to see signs that he has a problem it would be best to get him checked by your vet.
