Default New and need help!

Hi,
We recently got two Russian dwarf hamster sisters we think they are Campbell’s and we were told that they should live together, when reading up and speaking to people it seems like them living together isn’t the best thing for them. We have only had them a few days and they don’t seem to ever go near eachother and yesterday had a little nip at eachother.
One of them also seems scared of the other staying in bed a lot and when she comes out is very nervous and skittish. We are very very anxious as we have heard some horror stories about what can happen so would rather just split them up, we want to do the best thing so are wondering if anything bad can happen from splitting them up?

At the moment we are non stop watching them and not wanting to go out so could really do with some advice
Thankyou

Worst thing that could happen if kept together is they'll fight to the death.

Worst thing that could happen if kept apart is that your wallet will be unhappy because you'll need to buy another cage, wheel, bowl, bottle, hides and toys if you haven't already.

In the wild hamsters would only come together to reproduce. If multiple hamsters lived together they'd have 'infinite' space to run away if trouble broke out. In a cage they can't do that. Honestly they're not going to get depressed if seperated if thats what you think. It'll be ok. I can't think of anything positive about keeping them housed together. I hope that helps

The answer is clear and simple.
Separate them now and you can all live happily ever after, hamsters and humans.

Agreed. You really do need to separate them x

Totally agree with the others. They must be separated and must live in separate cages. Hamsters can be brutal to each other if they fight. My one rescued hamster came from a previous owner where he was sharing a cage with a sibling and he was badly injured by his brother.

Hello,
Your 2 hamsters should not be together if anyone of them don't like each other. It can cause a lot of stress for both of your hamsters making them bite or even kill each other. For your case, I highly recommend to split them into different cages. For your hamsters safety, separate them.

Good Luck with your two new hamsters!

Even if you had two dwarf hamsters who did like each other, the chances are that you would need to separate them at some stage, as grudges can develop and they are not very forgiving. But certainly as they seem unhappy from the outset, they need to each have their own space. Hamsters are solitary creatures and won't get lonely on their own.
