Exclamation New hamster, wants to come out and play but won't come into my hands.

Hi,

I've just got my hamster (2 days ago), she is about 6-7 weeks old. She is use to her breeder handling her and letting her play out of her cage every day. Domino wants to come out but when I put my hand near to see if shes ready to trust me, she just runs into her wheel to get a way or hides. But then when I leave, she's back at the glass wanting to get out.

What should I do? She's also started to chew the bars, I think she's stressed.

Cage:
Detolf IKEA
Plenty of bedding as she loooooves to dig and burrow.
Wooden chews
28cm wooden wheel
Sand bath
Plenty of hide outs

Thanks in advance!

You could try a hamster taxi to transfer until she's used to your smell. Put a seed in a mug and she's likely to go in then lift her out. She needs to get used to your smell and doesn't know you yet because you are new to her and she's used to her breeder's smell.
That's my theory anyway.

Yes, Ria's idea is a great suggestion. When I adopted Star she could be jumpy and squirmy, so she got transferred everywhere in a jug I had. She is no longer jumpy or squirmy. Just give them time to bond with you and get used to all the new smells and sounds.

You could also try some cardboard (toilet roll) boredom breakers with food inside - for something else to chew on, or some waterhyacinth mats

or something like this

if there is a way to attach them to where your hamster is chewing.

I love that idea as a mug taxi, so cute. And I've heard a lot about these whimzee chews, I'll see to getting some for her. Thank you for all the tips and advice, I just want her to be happy and make I do everything right, as I've had hamsters before but in the small cages, wrong food, put them in balls (I was only young).

Now I'm doing it the right way!

Thank you

Okay, she's chewed the whimzee but still wants the bars 🙈 I've bought her more chewy things, she's just not interested 🙈
