Default New hamster hoarding all his food?

Hi!
I'm new to the hamster owning community after years of owning gerbils. Yesterday I adopted a beautiful long haired dove banded syrian named Freddie <3

This morning I noticed his food bowl was completely empty, so I presume he has taken all the food to his hoard. I know this is a normal behaviour for new hamsters as they don't know if the food source is scarce or not, and overhoarding should calm down with time.

However, how do I know when to re-feed him? I have no clue where his hoard is at the moment and because he is still settling in with no interaction for a couple of days I don't want to go looking for it, so I can't keep track of how much is in there?

Thanks! ~ Holly and Freddie

Default Re: New hamster hoarding all his food?

i generally do every 2 or so days between feedings. i give 1 tbsp in his dish and 1tbsp scattered around every 2 days, 3 if it takes him longer to empty his dish. hamsters won't starve themselves.

it just depends on the hamster. try out some different timings until you find wha works for you.
