Unhappy Help with sanitizing wooden toys

Hi this is our first post, sadly a few weeks ago our boy Cocoa passed away from suspected wet tail, after trips to the vets, antibiotics and our best efforts to keep him hydrated, he just didn't make it . We searched your forums for advice which was brilliant, and we are so sad about losing him and miss him lots. Thinking ahead to when we are ready to house a new hammy, should we throw away all the wooden items or clean them somehow? I have sterilised the cage with Milton's. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks xx

i believe some people bake them or boil them? but it might be safer just to throw them out and get new ones. i would wait and see what other members here say- i've only had one hamster, so i won't be much help on the use of toys, etc. on two.

I would just toss them. You have a suspected serious illness, and even with baking or boiling you run the risk of not killing all the bacteria and such that could cause your new hamster to get sick, while it would be much less of a risk to just buy completely new wood toys.

It may cost more short term, but I personally can't justify trying to save money when it could be the difference between a beloved pet staying healthy or getting seriously ill and maybe even dying.

Thanks for the replies, I'll go with my gut feeling and just replace them, it's just not worth the risk. I had a large 12" wooden wheel from Zooplus but am thinking of replacing it with a plastic one, easier to keep germ free, is there a good quiet one anyone can recommend? the ones I have seen dont look too sturdy. Still not quite ready for the new hammy yet, miss our Cocoa too much still...

I agree to just throw out anything wooden so that there is no risk in making ur next hammy sick
I recommend https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00...KL5A1OLE&psc=1 this wheel I currently have a small girl Syrian who fits in the smaller size but am going to upgrade her to the bigger one soon as I now have a large cage and can fit a larger wheel it's not completely silent however I've tried many wheels and it's one of the quietest ones that I've had
Hope this helps and hope that you feel better about your loss soon I'm dreading that day

Highly recommend the silent runner - i did a video on it - I do appreciate it is very expensive but it is quiet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QudWsqJiPU&t=8s
if that is too expensive the one that primroseandella recommends is not bad, i have that as a spare for when my Luna is free roaming or in her run.
