Default Hamster bedding (PLEASE HELP)

Hi,
I was just wondering what the best possible bedding to use for Peanut is.

I currently just use bedding that's from wilko or home bargains. I have noticed it is quite rough though, I also give her some ripped up toilet paper which she likes to put in her bed.

I would like to know some good brands that I could use that arnt to expensive as she has a massive cage that nearly uses up a full bag of bedding, I have looked at care fresh bedding but its quite expensive

I would also like to know some other substrates that is safe for hamsters that I could add in other that normal bedding.

-Many thanks, Hollie and Peanut 💗

Hi

Is it a paper based or wood based bedding you are currently using? I would avoid any pellet beddings (such as paper pellets or wood pellets) because they can’t burrow in them. Personally I use Fitch paper bedding, which you can get on Amazon. The price seems to keep going up unfortunately, but I find a bag lasts a very long time. It’s great for hamsters to burrow in and is great for odour control. Carefresh is an okay option, but like you said, it is expensive and a bit dusty. Opinion on wood shavings varies, but I personally wouldn’t use them because they can be dusty and have sharp pieces in,

I use Fitch - like Carefresh but better as no dust A 10kg bag costs £22 but lasts me about 6 months. Hammies love it as they can pile it up or use bits of it in their nest, as well as the ripped up toilet paper. Only available online but price includes delivery. It works out even cheaper if you get the 20kg bag but that is really big! I get the 10kg bag as it's not too big to store in the house - about the size of a child's beanbag chair. In fact I used to keep mine in the corner of a room with a throw over it so it looked like beanbag.

The other popular bedding you can buy in bulk is Hugro hemp from Zooplus. I was allergic to that so stick with the Fitch - which is hypoallergenic and made from recycled food grade paper. Great stuff.

Bear in mind also that hammies can be allergic to any type of wood bedding, even hardwoods which are the safest ones to use - I find most wood beddings are too dusty anyway.

I like megazorb. sometimes a bit cheaper on amazon (but not always)

I mixed it with carefresh once, but prefer it just on it's own.

I use Carefresh for my Syrian and Kaytee C&C for my Dwarf. Both available at pets@home and often on offer.

I normally use the wood based bedding from Wilko for £2 it lasts me about 1 sometimes 2 months. I will definitely have a look at the Fitch and see what I think to it, Thankyou!

I have also just found this bedding which seems quite cheap:

What do you think of that one? ☺️

I agree, Megazorb is probably my favourite substrate choice as it's cost effective (and definitely since Fitch began raising their prices so high) and I find that we can go longer between clean outs than we do on other substrate types.

You can sometimes get it from local equestrian shops at a fairly reasonable price.

I haven't seen that one before. It looks ok but Fitch works out much cheaper. It says that 56 litre bag weighs 3.18kg and it costs £14.99. A 10kg bag of Fitch costs £22.

The Small Pet Select bedding is definitely recommended! The qualities it has make it an ideal choice, as it's not a wood based substrate which can eventually cause allergies in many cases. It's also sludge free virgin fiber which is what you should aim for in paper(which Carefresh is most definitely not, same with Kaytee Clean & Cozy).

It also would be fairly simple to buy the Small Pet Select bedding in bulk if you needed to and had the space to store it, which could definitely help cut long term costs since it works out cheaper that way(about 23.74 for a 178l bale vs 28.43 for the same size if bought individually).

Some advantages over Fitch are that it actually states virgin fiber(Fitch does not, and if they're using recycled paper even if food grade there's no guarantee there aren't dyed bits going into your bedding which isn't good), it's sludge free(Fitch on the other hand says nothing about this other than the blanket statement of "food grade"), and definitely unbleached. Many substrates don't even address any of these, including the popular Carefresh and Kaytee Clean & Cozy.

For the minimal cost difference in bulk for a bit less product, I'd still say it's worth it to go with Small Pet Select instead of Fitch. It may not be the cheapest, but it's most definitely the safest choice you will have in the UK as far as paper based bedding goes. Keep in mind that this is a product from the US which could certainly increase the cost, as well as the potential for such high standards causing increased production costs as well.

You could also mix the Small Pet Select aspen shavings(another virgin fiber and not reclaimed or recycled product) with the paper bedding. You can do this with their mixed bedding pack and buy both together that way which saves you some money.

I use Kaytee C&C you can usually get the 85L bags for £20 online so it doesnt work out too expensive, definitely goes further than Carefresh.
