Hello I'm new to hamster central. I've had my female Syrian for 15 months and she has unexpectedly become my most beloved acquisition ever. I only wish her short life expectancy was much longer and I can't imagine my life without Hammy so she will be replaced when the sad time arrives. I do regret not having bred her - she has a sweet and gentle nature and makes me smile everyday. I actually don't know anyone else who owns hamsters (apart from online) and no one I know can understand my obsession and love for all things Hammy.

Re: New member
Thanks for the welcome and replies to me 1st post. I'd like to know if anyone else allows their hamsters to come and go from their cages whenever they choose? When I found out just how far these little creatures can run every evening/morning I couldn't bear to keep my Syrian locked up at all. She is free to roam in my home and although this has caused some problems for myself I make sure everywhere is hazard free and she is a very healthy and I believe a happier hamster.

I wish I could free roam mine but I live in a small flat. We are moving this month and one of the thoughts is when we view, can I make a hamster safe free roaming room.
Although most of them do have a separate living and dining room, even the terrace houses.

Re: New member
That is a great idea but I must warn you from my own experience that a hammy will always try to explore/escape so will chew any door frame along its bottom edge or any crevices or corners. Carpets and soft furnishings, including low hanging curtains are all fair game to a lively hamster following his/her instincts. I've learnt all this to my cost but with a little forethought and innovation it is all worth it to be able to see your little friends true character and instincts come alive. Good luck with your move and the creation of a new hammy habitat room! I only have Daisy*** who being female may be a bit more 'destructive' due to her nest building enjoyment. Aren't we always still learning?
