Hello :)
My name's Maura and I'm new to this forum. I'm looking into buying a hamster as a pet for myself, I have no other pets at the moment. I'm somewhat disabled, using a stick and a wheelchair to get around, so don't get out very often except to appointments, so looking for a small companion. I'm a bit of a night owl, and I've gotten and read a book on hamsters from the RSPCA in order to make the best choice and so my new friend will have the best of care
I'm in no particular rush, I don't need it (him or her :P) right away, I want to make sure I get the right animal. I'll get the necessary equipment before I go shopping for my pet, obviously.
Looking for any advice, Hamster-minded friends, advice on where to buy (I live in Suffolk, UK), things like that.

Re: Hello :)
Hello and welcome!!
Weird as it might be to think, the RSPCA isn't really the best resource for up to date hamster information! Care standards have come on so much the past 6-7 years that the RSPCA, pet shops etc just haven't been keeping up. But there is plenty of up to date info here! And a wealth of experience to draw on. Don't hesitate to ask anything at all
As for getting a ham, would always recommend a registered breeder. There don't seem to be many near you tho but the list is available here if you want to take a look. A good breeder gives you the best chance at a well socialised animal bred for good health temperament (rather than profit).
A pet shop ham is a bit of a crapshoot. I choose to rescue from either the adoption section at a pets at home, or unwanted hams on gumtree. They all deserve love of course but you are taking more of a risk on health and temperament.
The Let's see your cages! thread is a great place to get started looking at what kind of habitat you want to get too

Re: Hello :)
Hi and welcome, I too rely on a stick and wheelchair and don't get out other than appointments. Adopting my Luna was the best thing I ever did, she has totally changed my life. I am sure when you get your hamster they will bring so much joy into your life. They are great companions. Personally I would only adopt a hamster, there are so many out there that need a loving home. Check out rescues in your local area/gum tree or
pets4homes have animals listed for adoption.
