Can hamsters get scabies from humans?
We just bought a Male hamster for my daughters birthday. Unfortunately a week after getting him. He came into direct contact with someone who had scabies. The pet store we got him from has been zero help. The nearest small animal vet is literally 4 hours away from our home. We just love our little guy. Can humans transmit scabies to hamsters? Any and all help is greatly appreciated. We absolutely love our little guy. Thank you in advance

Re: Can hamsters get scabies from humans?
No hamsters cannot get human scabies. They only live on humans. Pets can become infested with a different kind of scabies mite that does not survive or reproduce on humans but causes “mange” in animals. Hamsters have a specific hamster mite but this cannot be caught by humans either.
I'd still avoid handling though if your child has caught scabies as they will be having chemical treatment I imagine.
