Default Play pens

Hi I'm new to this forum. I got a Syrian hamster just over 2 weeks ago and she's settled and tamed really well. She'll climb out of her cage onto my hand but seems to randomly jump for no apparent reason when in her cage (not all the time, just occasionally) is this normal behaviour? She seems fine otherwise, and is eating, drinking, grooming herself and playing.

Also I want to get her a play pen and have seen mixed reviews about them. Some people recommend a proper pen from a pet store while others say to use a children's ball pool. Which do people feel would be better?

Thanks in advance

Do you mean jumping off a platform or something or more like a scare?

I don't recommend ball pits for Syrians as they will very easily climb out especially if there is that netting material up the sides. They're also quite small. The usual wire ones from petshops are useless as again they'll scale the wall in a second. If you can't free range them by hamster proofing a room very securely then I would just use something like large wooden boards (or cardboard) and making it as big as you can. There is a wooden playpen off zooplus which is ok size wise but if you can make a larger one that would be better. Some people have also used storage cube grids cable tied together but not entirely sure if that's syrian proof.

I made a playpen using storage cube panels - plastic ones not wire ones. It's tall enough that no Syrian has got out of it, though it is a supervised activity only (and I make sure toys aren't near the edges). The pet shop play pens are very easy to escape, even for a Chinese hamster.

I like the plastic one because it can be cleaned easily, it folds down nicely to store, and it can be adjusted according to how big a pen you want - you can use more panels if you choose. I wrote about mine here and here is the original thread where I got the idea.

Thank you very much. No she doesn't jump off anything she just suddenly jumps like she's scared even though nothing seems to have happened to make her jump

She will be closely supervised whilst she is in her play pen and have bought lots of toys which will hopefully keep her occupied so fingers crossed there will be no great escapes . Will give the storeage cubes a try as our house is quite small so something that folds away would be ideal

Thanks again
Gemma
