New Hamster Advice

Hi, my son has been desperate for a hamster for a few years but we have held him off until he had reached a suitable age. We are getting him a hamster for his birthday and have purchased the cage etc but now just need to get the hamster. I was wondering if he would be better of with a male or female hamster as his first pet or whether there is very little difference generally between their temperaments etc? Any advice would be greatly welcomed. Also I’ve had a search and can’t seem to find any local breeders (Sussex/Kent) so was planning on getting the hamster for Pets Corner, unless anyone knows of any breeders close by.
