Smile Hello, hey, hi!

Hello everyone,

My name is Ben and yesterday I became a dad to a beautiful Syrian girl who I've named Luna, in honour of my favourite Harry Potter character!

She is bringing me so much joy. I haven't held her yet but I've been singing softly to her and I gave her a banana chip which she loved! (Although it will only be as an occasional treat!)

I am very interested in making my own mix for her and doing everything I can to make her happy, healthy and loved.

Do you have any tips for a beginner?

I'm looking forward to getting to know you all as we progress on this journey!

Cheers,

Ben

Hi & welcome to the forum
Congrats on getting Luna, look forward to hearing more about her as she settles in.
You'll find lots of useful info if you browse around the forum but if you have any questions just ask away!
Making your own mix quite a challenge, you do need to do lots of research & calculations to get it right but if you're interested in that sort of thing it can be a very satisfying thing to do.
There's a thread here where we discussed that some time ago that might help give you an idea of what's involved.

Hey! Thank you for being so welcoming! I suppose my biggest question at the minute is about food. I've bought a Harry hamster and wondered if this is considered good quality? I want her to have the best so any advice of mixes would really help!

Yea I've gone through that thread you suggested and have some ideas but think it's gonna be expensive to make my own, I'm gonna have to plan it out and budget haha but either way I'll make sure, hopefully with some advice, that she's eating the right stuff.

Lots of people use Harry Hamster & their hams do fine on that, it is one of the better foods as there aren't many really!
If you want a more natural type of diet the Rodipet one is also good but more expensive plus you have delivery costs, it's not so bad if you buy a few bags & keep them in the freezer though. This one also needs a bit of a protein top up for a younger ham.
With Harry Hamster & a good variety of daily veg (once used to it, begin gradually) plus a few extras now & then you would be giving a perfectly adequate diet so don't worry too much about that.

Hey everyone, thanks so much for your replies! I have a question about hoarding. So Luna is hoarding in her den and also in a dark, semi private corner of the cage underneath the second level as it were, is it normal for them to hoard in multiple locations? Tia. Also found out she loves the banana chips in her food as she nibbles on them as soon as I replenish haha

Hi welcome yes some hamsters do have multiple hoards & even multiple nests sometimes. She might be hoarding in different areas due to not settling in yet though. It can take them a while to establish sleeping, hoarding & peeing areas.

Edit
Not sure what you’re doing about food but if you do want the best then you’ll have to order from Germany unfortunately. A lot easier than making your own! Yes shipping is expensive but it is 100% worth it when you see them enjoying a more natural diet without the pellets etc in Harry hamster. For Syrian food mixerama & getzoo foods are good. Rodipet would work too but seem to be reading more mixed reviews there.
