Intro post - Bob, Jeff, Chungles and Sossij

Hey folks

Been lurking for a while so thought it only polite to say Hi 😊

We’ve been rodenting for about a year as a family now, although I had several as a child (_many_ moons ago!). We got a couple of sister gerbils first, Bob and Jeff (named before they were sexed!) since we had most experience with griblets. They’re happy, healthy and playful as ever. But why are you on Hamster Central talking about gerbils, I hear you ask. Because once the gerbils had settled in, we got our first hamster. He is a dream. A beautiful little Winter White Dwarf with perfect grey and white colouring. He has the most amazing temperament of any creature I’ve ever known! His name has evolved over time but he mostly goes by Chungle Fungle, or King Chungles. He really is sooooo tame. The day he came home, I could literally place my hand into his cage and he’d climb on! He loves to go on little ‘ventures, give wonderful cuddles and ... sleep. A lot.

Because he is the most amazing creature on the planet, we decided as a family that his line must continue. King Chungles, the First of His Name, requires a dynasty. Enter the future Mrs Chungles, stage left. She was pure white when we bought her and where Chungles has that lovely grey back with a darker dorsal stripe, hers is a more sandy, beige colour which reminded me of a sausage roll! So she has adopted the name Sossij. I swear she’s part Winter white, part gerbil! She’s up three times as long as Chungles and waaaaay more active. She is, however, equally tame and loves cuddles and ‘ventures just as much.

Sossij is over 3 months old now (Chungles is nearly a year) so we’ve just started introducing them in the same play pen for brief periods. They’ve had identical, adjacent cages for ever so they know each other’s smell and are used to sitting up all night chatting and plotting to take over the world.

Congrats on getting your first hamsters, they both sound lovely, look forward to seeing them.

Are they pet shop hamsters? If so they won't be winter whites , they will be Russian hybrids (a cross between WW & Campbells Russian) you should never breed hybrids, there is a huge potential for problems for both mother & pups, no pet shop hams should be bred as you need to know their history & have a good understanding of genetics before breeding.

Hi there, lovely little animals you've got. I'm not super familiar with the really small kinds of hamsters as I have a Syrian but I also have a pair of gerbils, two polar fox males. Both gerbils and hamsters are quite the characters; keep us updated! Welcome to HC!
