Squawking
Hello Everyone
Just looking for a bit of advice.
We have a Syrian Hamster who is about 9 months old. Up until about 2 weeks ago she was perfectly quiet but just recently she’s been making squawking noises at intermittent periods. Sometimes it’s in her cage...sometimes it’s when she’s being handled or just out in our room having a run about.
Really concerned as I read it could be because she’s in pain or frightened. She’s still eating and drinking and her mobility is ok.
Can hamsters sprain their legs maybe?
I’m worried to handle her in case she is in pain and I make it worse.
I’d be really grateful for any insight into this. Xx

Re: Squawking
Hi there and welcome. I have rescued some 'screechers' but having had yours for nine months with no problems it does seem a bit strange that she has just started this. I'm lucky in that I have a good vet. It may be worth a visit with her, just for your peace of mind. Its good that she's still eating, drinking etc. Would be interested to hear of outcome.

Re: Squawking
It is strange, they can easily hide signs of something being wrong so it's not possible to say she doesn't have a problem of some sort but she does sound fine other than suddenly making this noise.
Has anything changed in or around her cage that might be frightening her or upsetting her somehow?

Re: Squawking
Thank you for your replies. I'm going to take her to the vets tomorrow as she's not herself and seems itchy and twitchy. Hate seeing her so agitated as shes usually such a sweet gentle placid girl and shes not happy at the moment.
Her cage is the same and i haven't changed anything
Hoping the vet will be able to check her over thoroughly and sort it out.
I'm going to leave her in her cage tonight...i don't want to agitate her further by handling her. I usually get her out every evening for a play but if shes in pain then I'll leave her for tonight.
I'll let you know what the vet finds. Fingers crossed its able to be fixed quickly. Xx

Re: Squawking
I took her to the vet and it seems she has soft tissue damage in her left elbow.
Got some metacam painkillers which I have to use in a syringe!! I’ve been putting it on her favourite food.
Just wondering how long it will take to heal. Got to take her back next week for a check up....really hoping it’s better by then as hearing her squawk in pain is heartbreaking. Xx

Re: Squawking
Sorry to hear that, hard to say how long it will take to heal but the metacam should relieve the pain for her, at least you know what the problem is now & she's getting the treatment she needs, hope she's better soon.
