Default cage change stressed Russian dwarf hamster

hi,
my family adopted a Russian dwarf 3 1/2 weeks ago. her initial biting led us to take our time and allow her to get accustomed to her new home and us. after three weeks in her new home, she was still climbing the glass and showing signs that she might bite, if we were to attempt to handle her. so we thought that investing in a cage that had more options for her would help...it is a good size and has safe and good toys and such, but the transition for her has been stressful. it has some of her old toys, her wheel and bedding inside. she is eating and drinking, and seeming to sleep a normal amount, however she is rolling and washing and scratching quite a bit. she's seems obviously anxious. she's been in her new cage almost 48 hours now...I'm wondering how to best help her. I have her old cage, I can return her, but i'm afraid that that will only increase her stress level. any thoughts would be appreciated. thank you...

I wouldn’t return her to the old cage, 48 hours isn’t long as it can take them days to get used to a new cage, it’s a big change. Best to just leave her alone while she re settles, make sure she has a large dark hide where she can retreat to. Definitely no cleaning or anything while she’s like this. Sometimes I find covering a portion of the cage helps too if it’s a tank, I do that nearly all the time with mine and it helps them feel more secure, just make sure there is enough air flow.

What mangoandmimi said!
It can take them up to a couple of weeks even to adjust to a new cage & it's best to just give them time & not change or clean anything apart from spot cleaning pee fora . few weeks while she settles in.
What you're seeing just sounds as though she's scent marking a lot which is natural so try not to worry.

Once she's had plenty of time to settle try interacting with her out of the cage in a playpen or other safe area where she will be much less likely to bite, they sometimes really don't like hands in the cage but are fine out of the cage.
