Talking New to this!!!! Opinions(:

Okay so I’m fairly new to this but quite recently have been very intrigued by small pets and I thought about those days back to being 7,8,9 years old and again and remembered how fun I used to have with my fluffy little friends, hamsters! I went to my local pet store around Christmas time, might I add how busy, and looked around and they happened to have one little Winter White Dwarf Hamster left and to me that was God’s way of saying she had to be mine. So I’ve went and bought a few supplies, I wouldn’t say much since I’m just getting started but it’s ten times the living conditions my childhood friends endured (( at that age, who’d have thought of hamster stress, living conditions and all around healthy well beings, I sure didn’t/: )) but I’m also very open to opinions, ideas in the cage set up, toys, tubes, etc. please don’t hold back. Thought I can’t say getting a big huge cage is something I can afford atm, I think what I have will suit her just fine for now. I have a 20 gallon long tank along with a 10 gallon tank right beside it. I’m currently in the process of grabbing some tubing from the pet store to connect the two. If you have any questions feel free to ask or post your input, I am all ears(:

Here are a few pics of the tank and what ones I could get of my lil girl!

The images aren’t showing, you’ll need to embed them, here’s a tutorial How To Embed Photos

Hamsters usually do better with one large continuous floor space than with a modular set-up but it’s fine as a starter cage until you can get her something bigger. If you can’t afford to buy a cage, you make a bin cage for pretty cheap.

I can’t see what wheel you have but you’ll want a plastic or wooden wheel between 6.5 and 8 inches. Russian dwarfs need a 15 - 20cm layer of substrate for them to burrow through. Aspen shavings, Carefresh, and Kaytee Clean & Cozy are the safest substrates in the US, avoid pine and other softwood shavings because they are toxic to hammies. You’ll also need a sandbath, I use childrens play sand which is a lot cheaper that chinchilla sand but chinchilla sand is also safe as long as it’s dust-free.

Also when you add the tubing, be careful not to have any vertical tubing because it will be difficult for her to climb.

I know finding good cages in the US is difficult & most people opt for bin cages or tanks, a 20 gallon tank is a bit on the small side but I agree it ok as a starter cage, it might be worth looking out for sales as I think they are often sold cheap & you may get lucky with a larger tank at an affordable price.
I also agree that one large space is better than two tanks connected, it can be difficult to connect them safely & in a way that is easily accessible without the tubes taking up too much space as they need to be at quite an angle for little furry feet to climb easily!
It is hard to comment without being able to see photos, not sure how long or how many posts it is before you can share photos but maybe you could try again later.
I use a 9" wheel for my Russian hamsters 8" is fine but I wouldn't use anything smaller.
A sandbath is important for dwarf hams so if you don't have one do add one to your set up using the sand already mentioned.

Just in case you don't know already your ham will be a Russian hybrid (cross between a Winter White & a Campbells) as no pure bred hams are available in pet stores, they are prone to diabetes so take care with the diet, it needs to be free of sugar, no honey or fruits.

Thanks for the opinion!! To be honest I’m not the biggest fan of the bin cages, they are wider but unless you get a long one I don’t see how most people’s bin cages are anything other than affordable, maybe if you have some pictures of bigger bin cages you could show me some? I’m not completely against it the idea! So you think long term wise having a tube ran from one tank to the other is something she won’t like? I keep plenty of soft paper bedding for her to burrow in, though that is what I’m going to use the extra tank for, mainly a few toys, her wheel and a big corner full of bedding to play in! Thanks for the advice on kids sand! I actually just looked it up and what an awesome alternative, cheaper and you get more!!! I’m in the process of buying a new wheel, plastic silent one at that LOL but she seems to be running okay on her metal one for now (more cage like bars than just the straight ones to run on). I honestly was thinking of making more a long the lines of an enclosed bridge from one to the other so she doesn’t have the ability to get stuck, get loose and also have the hall way/bridge to run and play on. And thank you, I’m currently looking up how to get the photos posted now!

This is an excellent option Fop Tamburino (top one). You’d need to take the hay rack out. Much better floor space. It’s similar to the duna multi in the uk

HAMSTER CAGES

You’d be better putting the money towards that than spending it on tubes really.
