Best time to get a new hamster
Hi to all of you fellow hamster lovers,
This is my first time posting on here as I've only ever used previous threads for help with my previous Syrian Fifi, but unfortunately I had to say goodbye to my baby a few weeks ago when she passed away after nearly three years of being part of the family.
I'm hoping for some advice on a getting a new hammy as i have bought a new set up and am all ready to go and get one today, however, I am due to go away with my family next week for 2 nights and I'm wondering if it is worth getting one now and starting to tame and then getting someone to check on them whilst I'm away, or if I should wait and get one when I'm back, but then I would have to keep walking past an empty cage for the next week.
Any advice would be brilliant please as I'm in a huge dilemma!
Thank you, Jess

Re: Best time to get a new hamster
Hi & welcome to HC.
I know a week can seem like a long time to be looking at an empty cage when you really want a new hamster but I would wait until you come back from your time away, the first few days a ham can be left to settle but they still need to start getting used to you being around & consistency is important with taming & settling in a new ham so having someone else check on them wouldn't be ideal really.

Re: Best time to get a new hamster
I had to wait three months for my birthday to come round with the setup in my bedroom. It was hell but by the time little paws arrived I was sooo ready and I'd done so much reading on here and got great advice that I think it is worth holding out. Like cypher said, my hammy really benefitted from me pottering around chatting and by the end of the firat week she was eating out my hand! Good luck!

Re: Best time to get a new hamster
l would also wait till you come back. Although they need leaving alone for 2 or 3 days when you first get them, leaving them in an empty house will be sensed by the hamster. Also those first few days are important for them getting used to your scent and sound of your voice nearby, and the usual noises and smells in the house and life going on around them.
Do you know where you're getting one from? Just thinking that over the next month there may be plenty of adverts on Gumtree for hamsters needing to be rehomed. Lots of people get them for Christmas and give up almost straight away or they are unwanted or the child gets bored etc.

Re: Best time to get a new hamster
I agree, wait until you get back and see if you can rescue an unwanted christmas hammie either from gumtree or a local rescue.

Re: Best time to get a new hamster
The post-Christmad rescue hamster as suggested is such a good idea! Aww, giving a home to a little one like that is super nice. My hammy ended up being a rescue amd I'm so pleased about it!

Agree with everyone! Wait until you come back! You will have all that time to bond and tame!
