Smile Introducing Diego & I, plus first time hammy owner Qs!

Hi everyone!
I'm a 23 year old female and I just got my first hamster (we picked him up on boxing day). He's a 10-12 week old Syrian who I've named Diego.

He seems to be settling in well, eating/drinking/going to the toilet is all fine. He is a bit shy and likes to stay in his little tubes most of the time where he seems to sleep and eat. He does come out for a wee explore around his cage for a few minutes every like 2 hours or so and he seems to he active and running at night. He's gnawing on the toys we got him and using his wheel so I think this all means he is a happy hammy?

He's currently lying down in a sausage shape in his tinnel and is making a soft chittering noise every so often, as well as nibbling his food he's stashed.

Put a nervous hammy mama at ease and tell me if this all sounds ok?

Thank you if you've read this far!

Sounds good to me, give him plenty of space and keep talking to him and let him get used to you and your smell. I wouldn't try to put your hands in the cage or touch him as he is such a new ham as it can really frighten them and they can actually be very territorial. They are in a strange place which is not familiar at all but he does seem to be very happy so just be a bit cautious just in case he is still a bit wary or nervous. Congrats on your new ham, hope all goes well for you and pumpkin!

Hi & welcome to HC

Congrats on Diego!
It can take them a while to settle in but he sounds as though he's doing ok, don't try to rush things with him, just go at his pace & he should be fine.

Hey and welcome to HC!
Congrats on Diego!
Like cypher said, it can take them a while to settle in so don’t rush it. Try talking to him softly so he can get used to your voice.

Hi and welcome to HC. Congratulations on your first hamster Diego. I agree with what Cypher & Sasha have said, give him time but be sure to talk quietly and softly to him, it'll get him use to your voice and smell.
