Re: Another newbie!
Pichu's new cage arrived today! I've kept the weird cat bed thing in at the moment as she's small enough to fit through the openings easily but I'm definitely aware she won't for long! Amazing the difference in size from what she was in - I'm so happy she has more space now and a lovely big wheel (which she has not come off of since I put her in there!)

Re: Another newbie!
WOW! Some difference in size, sounds like Pichu loves her new home, extra space and wheel.

Re: Another newbie!
I agree with TL, WHOA! The size difference is huge! She is going to live all that space! On another note, I would add some more bedding. Hamsters need 6-7” (more is always better) of bedding to dig in. They are burrowing animal after all.

I've already discovered that the cage given to us by a family member (Rosewood XL) is too small, so I have an Alaska on the way now from zooplus and we're looking forward to theming it and making it a fun environment for little Pichu (named after pokemon, of course).
No photos of Pichu yet as we're still letting her settle in, but already she comes to the cage door when it's opened and likes to be handled.
I haven't had a hamster since I was a child myself, but I have kept rats as an adult so hopefully that knowledge will apply to Pichu to some extent.
Looking forward to getting to know everyone and doing the best I can for our new addition!

Hi there! Welcome! Are we sure Pichu is for Dexter?! ;D Jokes aside, she looks really cute and chilled out already and nice one on the cage upgrade. I'm sure your new addition to the family will get on great! Congratulations!

She has more now! I'd only been able to find really small bags of aspen so it wasn't enough. I've topped her up with carefresh though and she also has a corner for her sand (which she LOVES) so she's all good Open to bedding suggestions though as carefresh is quite expensive for how much is actually in the pack, and I can't find aspen except in small bags in the reptile section

Re: Another newbie!
The cheapest & best substrates in the UK are Fitch which hams love & it comes in big bales so works out economical in the long run, the 10kg bag will last a while but the 20lg bag works out cheaper is you have storage space, the other is Kaytee clean & cosy which is cheaper & a lot better than Carefresh, the 48l bag is probably the best size to get.
