Unhappy My first post - Concerns about my hamster

Looking for advice about my hamster
Hi! I have a hamster named Max I just got him about 2 months ago. I am estimating he is about 4-5 months old. I’ve had several hamsters before and I noticed some odd behaviour with him. He has a cage that is the recommended size for a syrian hamster. However I did notice very early he was beginning to bite the wire bars for most of the night, and ignoring his wheel that he does not seem to like (recommended size wheel as well.) He also has plenty of wooden toys and chews, and even sand bath and litter. I noticed his water bottle was leaking a lot and I replaced it with a new one. He now mainly bites that instead of the bars. The problem with this is he is getting water all over him and drinking too much. Another problem I have been noticing is he has a little compartment that he has nested in, I notice a lot of condensation and the woodchips as well as him are all wet after he’s done sleeping. I took the bedding out this area because I was concerned it was not good for him. I should also add that so did everything right as far as introducing myself to him and he still runs away from me when I hold him. I don’t know what to do differently so that he is healthy and happy.

What do you mean by condensation? If you have anot enclosed plastic cage then condensation can be a problem which can be caused by the temperatures in the room. Try not to let the cage get as hot as discussed humid and if needed you may eventually have to change the cage or add more ventilation. Also, if just one area if the bedding is wet, it may be that your ham has just chosen this area to use as a toilet. Have you tried any sort of toilet training with max? A useful method can be found on erinsanimals youtube channel. Check it out .

As for your hamster being timid, how have you tried to tame your hamster? Some hamsters may just take a lot longer than others to get used to you so you may need to go back to the simple steps of sitting outside the cage (when the hammie is awake) and letting them get used to you being outside the cage. Let them get used to your voice and smell.

Welcome to HC.
Sorry to hear you're having problems getting your ham settled, they are all individuals & sometimes it can take a while to get things right for them.
If you have a photo of your cage set up that would be helpful to see if we can suggest changes that might work better for him.
Do you have a plastic house for him? Condensation can build up in those but if it's getting very wet I wondered if he pees in there?
If you don't have a good size wooden house (which would need to be painted with Plastikote water based enamel) you could just use a cardboard box like a shoe box, no base just laid on top of a good deep layer of substrate (at least 15-20cm) so he can burrow down into it to make a nice nest, just cut a small door into one side of the box.
What steps have you taken with taming so far? Have you done any out of cage taming at all, some hams really don't like interacting in the cage or having hands in the cage at least until they are tame so using a playpen or other safe play area usually works best.
