Default Newbie hamster mum

Hi
My name is Diana and I'm in the UK. Tomorrow I get my first hamster, a cute ball of fluff called Oliver. He is coming from a friend who had to split her 2 dwarves, as they started fighting.

I've been stalking this forum for ages, researching diet, habitat etc. I keep degus, but appreciate that there are signifiant differences between the 2 species. Thus far I have managed to make a cage, 90cm by 55 cm, with a deep area of bedding for burrowing, lots of hiding places (5 last count, plus bits of log etc), and am about to stick lollipop sticks to the side of the ramps so they don't fall off when going between the ledges (Degus seem to be a bit more agile, and don't fall off so much, so that was an important learning point ). I have JR Farm dwarf hamster mix in, and have managed to restrain myself from putting in hay..... it seems so unnatural when hay is such an important part of the degu's diet, but I'm sure I'll get used to it!

Looking forward to getting to know my hamster, and all of you as well.

Hmmmm..... that’s rather worrying, I wonder if there’s something odd going on with the email site........ email has always been reliable, in fact my main problem is too much spam and trying to block it! Thank you for trying. But I’m here at last, just in time for my ball of fluff

Thank you for the welcome.
It turns out my fiend can’t keep the names the children gave the hamsters straight, so I have the hamster I was expecting, but he’s called Deni...... He is the more aggressive, bitey one, so I figured my friend would want to keep the other one......

I’ve popped him in the cage, with nesting material and substrate from his old cage, and he immediately started exploring. It was so lovely to watch, but I was interested to notice that he tried to nibble on everything! I suspect that his biting of fingers is just an exploratory behaviour, which made sense as it didn’t seem overly aggressive, just a bit painful. I guess it also means that being settled in a large cage with a calm adult mum may not cure the nibbling........

Anyway, having covered every inch of the cage, Deni decided to ignore the 5 nest areas I made up for him to choose from, and made his own nest in the tunnel I put leading into the deep substrate area He seems happy, and I’m enjoying watching him. I need to put the photos on the computer and resize them, but will get them uploaded soon xxx

So here's some pictures of Deni, and one of his cage. I made it myself from scratch (why I decide to do these things, I do not know, but I'm really not keen on commercial cages!). I live alone, so although the cage is in coffee table mode, it isn't really a busy area, but has the advantage that I can see Deni when he comes out to play!
