Have you looked in your local pets at home? They sometimes have hamsters in their adoption centre, the money goes to charity so that's a good way to find one. Otherwise gumtree or preloved may have some, a bit difficult to check for you as NE England covers a huge area.
Don't really know of any other rodent rescues up your way with hamsters I'm afraid.

I was going to say Austin's Hamster Haven too - it's a main one in the north - I don't know of any further north. There is also Hamster Haven (same name without the Austin!) in the Wirral in Cheshire - that might be further for you as north west though. Whereabouts are you? I know the one in Cheshire will offer to meet you halfway and Austins deliver - although maybe if it's a long way they'd do half way as well. I'm in the North east and Doncaster is an easy train journey. Hammies travel well on the train in a pet carrier

This is the other Hamster Haven (Cheshire)

Also have you googled your nearest RSPCA? They may have rescue hamsters - it depends on the area as to whether they have hamsters these days I think.

And this website lists rodent rescues in the Uk

This is the list for the Northeast. There's nothing further north than Doncaster for Hamsters really - I'm not sure if Kays Hill is still there. There's Great Ayton/Middlesbrough RSPCA but they rarely have hamsters - just had a look and they just have ferrets and cats.

SmallPetsMatter.co.uk - Rodent rescues in the North East of England

Have you looked on Gumtree for your region? There are often people wanting to rehome hamsters on there. Also this website (a hamster in Middlesbrough needing a home and some robos needing homes). Be careful with robos though - they breed very quickly and aren't always sexed correctly - I don't want to put you off though as I adopted a robo - I just made sure they had sexed him correctly by sending them some photos of the differences!

Have you thought about cages etc yet? Zooplus have a good range of suitable sized ones that aren't too expensive and have free delivery. The Alaska, Barney and Alexander are all popular for Syrians. Or the Savic Hamster Plaza which is sold online by Pets at Home. Otherwise most commercial cages in pet shops are either too small or unsuitable in some way. Also, whether you go on a train or not, it's a good idea to have a pet carrier to bring a hamster home in - and always useful in case you need to go to the vet or to pop a hamster in while you clean the cage etc. Guinea pig sized ones are better for Syrian hamsters - there's enough room for plenty of bedding and a little house. I have this one and most people have similar type ones.

It's fine for a dwarf hamster as well Cages for dwarf hamsters can be the same but there are height issues with fall risks so they need setting up differently. Or there are perspex tank style cages for dwarf hamsters like the duna multy or maxi duna multy.

Hi we have a lovely cage set up already and a small carrier but think after reading your messages will buy a larger carrier - especially if travelling by train. Thank you for all the advice here xxx
