Re: Just beginning !
Hi everyone.
I have a question. You all know I'm a new owner of a little Syrian . My question, is it normal for him to not use his wheel ? I bought a flying saucer type of about 7 inches. Should I try a different drum type ? Or is this normal for a new Hamster ?
Thanks again .

Re: Just beginning !
Most hams go crazy for the wheel but a flying saucer isn't the best & it may be a bit small, I would get an upright wheel, 8" should be ok for a young Syrian but most need a 10" or even 12" when fully grown.

Re: Just beginning !
Thanks. I was thinking about this, and already have one in mind . It's 9 inches and could be mounted to the side of the cage if you want .
I'll let you all know.

Re: Just beginning !
Hi everyone.
If you have been following me , you know I have a little problem with my new little hamster. He wasn't using his flying saucer type wheel. But I have great news. I bought a new Silent Runner wheel and as soon as he woke up he started using it ,and I mean really using it . Once he got the hang of it , he wouldn't stop. That was three days ago . He also has stopped trying to crew the cage bars. Maybe he just needed more exercise. He seems pretty happy.
Next I'm going to add some tubes for him to use.
I'll let you all know.

Re: Just beginning !
So pleased your ham is loving his silent runner wheel and stopped chewing the cage bars.
What's his name?

Re: Just beginning !
Thanks,
I had a hard time coming up with a name that fits. So I came up with Hamilton. Ham for short. How original is that ?? Right now he's sleeping , but he just came out to have a snack , filled up his cheeks , and back to his den .

Re: Just beginning !
Just a update:
I hope this is normal, but Hamilton sleeps almost all day only coming out to eat a little . He really doesn't wake up till about 2:00 or 3:00 am, then he eats more and plays. He's still up and around when I get up , and seems to want attention . As soon as he sees me , he starts climbing the cage by the cage door. So I let him climb on my hand and take him out for a while. He seems to like it. When I put him back , he's back trying to climb out again. He keeps this up for a time then it's like a clock goes off and back to sleep he goes.. I hope this is normal ? He's done this now for the past three day.
I'll keep you posted.
Ron

Re: Just beginning !
His behaviour is normal. Hamsters often sleep most of the day. Sometimes coming out to get food, water, pee. Then go back to sleep. My dwarf hamster have two brief periods out of their nest each day. Then at night they are active. When I get up my hamsters are sometimes still awake for awhile, then go to sleep.
