Default New hamster mummy in Northern Ireland

Hi,
I've 2 boys aged 8 and 7 who have been torturing me for months for a pet, so we've now got a pair of (hybrid) dwarf hamsters. They are supposedly for the boys, but somehow I'm the one doing all the work of looking after them.
I've learn't a LOT from reading here in the last few weeks. The boys are loving playing with Salt and Pepper but still very nervous about them escaping. I made a big fold-away play cage that I can set up on the floor - the boys can sit in along with the hamsters and lots of toys.

Hi and welcome to HC! Congrats on getting Salt and Pepper for your boys and yourself. I love their names, btw. I hope that family will create a really beautiful and loving bond with one another. I think it is wonderful that your boys are having so much fun playing with their new hammies in the play cage. Hopefully, they will also equally enjoy the looking after portion as well. I look forward to getting to know your two fluffies, seeing pics of them whenever they settle in more, and seeing you around the forum. Eros, Arwen, and Hinata send welcoming whisker kisses to you all.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. We love having our hamsters but still have lots to learn. The boys picked and named them with no help from me. The names suit them perfectly

Hiya I’m new too! The girls are getting a hamster which we are collecting later on today!

Love your hammies names.

How did you make the fold away cage? I need something like this for when I clean the cage out. Xxx

Hi Galaxyblue,
I followed the instructions in this thread.
I used this shoe rack. I only used the outer parts of it as my dwarf hammies can't climb, it only cost me £12. I used cable ties and had enough panels to make 2 large playpens. It folds away flat and is super easy to store.
I can put them both together in the garden to make a giant one, but tbh the hammies like it smaller. I assume they don't like too big an open space.
I'm going to add some tape over the corners as Pepper is a chewer and tries to eat his way out through the gap.
Good luck with the new hammy Looking forward to seeing the pics.
