Re: Hello everyone!
Good to hear he's enjoying the tissue & getting braver now
Mealworms are very high in fat so just two or three a day is plenty, as he's young & still growing that won't be too much.
You can usually find mealworms sold for reptiles & for garden birds in pet shops & online.

You can also get mealworms in discount shops like Poundland, Home Bargains etc.

Re: Hello everyone!
Hello everyone, I'm back from my week away, and very surprisingly it seems to have done Barnard more good than bad! He's so much calmer and braver and doesn't run away too much anymore, I'm thinking he just needed time to grow up and mature a little! So I'm very happy with his progress and his current behaviour.
There's just one thing id like an opinion on, he's very healthy and I cannot see anything wrong with him at all- no cuts/sores or anything that I can see having looked all over his body... however when I was cleaning his cage yesterday I found some of his paper/tissue bedding with blood on it. There wasn't a huge amount, but it wasn't a tiny amount either... I also found a few blood drop/marks on his plastic tunnel... I've decided not to take him to the vet as he seems completely normal and I can't see anything wrong with him at all and there are no visible cuts on him and he seems very content so I'm thinking whatever happened happened soon after I went away and has since healed (but I will obviously keep an eye out, and since there is no blood in his cage now that I have cleaned it I will be able to see if there is any new blood).... I'm just checking that other people think my decision is ok, or if anyone could possibly think of what could be the explanation to this blood that would be great!

Re: Hello everyone!
Where you found the blood on the plastic tunnel, it may have a crack in it or a bit sticking out, you need to carefully check the tunnel. You may need to remove it and replace it.

Re: Hello everyone!
Hi and welcome to HC! I'm so glad that Barnard's taming is going so excellently and your week away only changed his taming and calmness in a positive way. I always find that the tissue trick as Cypher had mentioned does wonders in taming and making hams feel much braver and confident concerning their human parent's scent. Btw, Barnard is absolutely adorable and makes the cutest expressions.
I'm so sorry that you found blood in his cage when you returned. Has their been any further signs of blood since then? I would definitely keep a very close eye on him as hams are excellent at keeping anything that is ailing them secret in order to protect themselves from appearing vulnerable. I would thoroughly exam all items in his cage to be sure that there isn't anything that could have broken or cut him even a tiny bit while you were away or that he could have fallen off of. If you are still concerned or see any possible changes in your ham's behavior, I personally would probably take him to the vet just to be sure that he doesn't have any internal bleeding. I always feel it is better to be safe as things could go wrong extremely quickly. I truly hope that Barnard will be alright. Best of luck to you both. Hugs to you.
