Smile Hello!! New Hamster Mom here 😊

Hello!! I live in the states, I'm 43 and this is my first ever hamster!! I have 3 children, two cats a dog and a fish. I have to admit I got the hamster at the desires of one of my children but I really like this little creature!! We had to read the book Humphrey for school and that's what's started this journey. After much thought on whether to add a hamster to our family a friend posted on FB she had two baby hamsters to home. So I took one on. We acquired a teddy bear Syrian hamster. Still not sure if it's a boy or girl so we named it Nugget. Since it happened so quickly I just went to my local pet shop got a cage and picked up the hamster. I started looking for information on how to best care for my new friend and quickly realized the cage was to small. I then ordered a much bigger cage that is now approximately 630 square inches. While in the smaller cage everything was going well we could watch our new friend do it's thing, was eating from my hand allowing me to pick it up for short stints and even transfer to clean the cage. We got the bigger cage two days ago and I have only seen Nugget out and about late last night. He/she was under bedding ALL day yesterday. I was worried it had escaped but after some poking around I saw a rustle and left him alone. Late at night when he came out I tried to get it to at least eat from my hand and he just sorta ran off and hid underground. There is plenty of stuff to do in there with three types of hideouts wheels and chew toys. I just want to see my little friend again.

Hello and welcome to HC.

It's great you quickly realised your cage wasn't suitable. As your hammy is still new to the family it is usual for them to be a little shy having a cage change. I wouldn't worry too much and just take things slowly again and they'll soon settle.

It's quite easy to sex a syrian..especially a long haired one. The boys have alonger "skirt" and will quite obviously have testicles.

Looking forward to hearing more about your little friend

Welcome to HC & congrats on getting your first ham!

A cage change can be stressful for them, even when it's for the better, & can take them a while to settle in, even a week or two sometimes so don't worry or try to rush things, if Nugget was interacting with you before then he will again once he's had a chance to settle in.

Hi and welcome to HC! Congrats on your first hamster! As others had mentioned, just give Nugget some time and I'm sure he will interact with you and your family once again. Have fun and see you around on the forum. Looking forward to getting to know Nugget and seeing him, too.
