Smile Hi all

Hi all. I've owned hamsters before but that was about ten years ago when I was much younger. I'm 18 now and living with my boyfriend. About two months ago we decided to get a hamster together. We bought a cage the same day from Pets at Home for £20. After watching ErinsAnimals videos on youtube I've become a little concerned about the size of her cage. It isn't obscenely small. I've switched out the four inch wheel that the cage cage came with for an 7-8 inch wheel and Clover seems very happy to run for hours on this wheel. I have fit lots of tubes inside and outside of the cage and she has a big glass coffee jar as her hide and deep bedding to burrow in. She has lots of chews made of wood as well has dog biscuits to keep her teeth worn down. I was considering building her an Ikea Billy cage.

Hi Bel,
Welcome to HC what type of Hamster have you got? Even the XL cages from P@H aren't that big really, I know like you started out with one.

Ghost our Syrian lives in an Alaska Cage which is pretty big and he loves it as did our last hammy before him. I got our Alaska cage from Zooplus and cost about £28 which is a bargain. There are pictures of his set up on his thread here on HC in the Syrian section.

Hi Bel04, and welcome to HC. I’m glad Clover is enjoying her new, big wheel!

Like Rads said, the cage you are using is to small and just one shelf of the IKEA Billy is also to small measuring only 434 sq in. The mimum cage size is 450 sq in. Even if the cage you get is 450 sq in that is still the mimum and is probably to small for most hamsters as each hamster has it own size preference. So, getting two Billy units will cost 40$(not including glass) and then measuring 868 sq in which is a great size. With the glass included (15$ each) your total would be 70$. Plus the cost of other thing needed to build the cage like mesh, wood, silicone, and nails. Of corse if you already have these other supplies the other supplies cost wouldn’t matter. That’s still a great price for its size, though and I think the Billy is still a great cage.

The IKEA Detolf is only 60$ and measures 1,024 sq in. It’s a great cage, as I have one and I’ve been very happy with it and so has my hamster. So, I think the IKEA Detolf would be your best bet as it’s about 150 sq in larger and 10$ cheaper. The IKEA Detolf is also easier to assemble as you just follow the instructions IKEA provides but just don’t assemble the door and shelf. You also can build the IKEA Detolf with one person but I recommend using two people. I would have failed miserably if my father wasn’t here to help me! I hope this helps!

Hey again, Clover is a Syrian. I looked up the Detolf and I won’t be able to fit that in the room me and my boyfriend share. I could fit the Billy cage. How much bigger than the Billy is the Alaska?

The Alaska cage is 627 sq in and the Billy (remember, it has to be two units) is 868 sq in. So, the Billy is 241 sq in larger than the Alaska. Both cages are great! Keep us updated!

Bel,
The Alaska is 800x500x500mm also you can get a playpen so Clover can have supervised out of cage free roaming to give her some more fun.
