Default Hello from new hamster owner

Hi,

I'm a new hamster owner. Well the hamster is really supposed to be my son's actually. She is a Syrian hamster called Pippin, though I call her SpiderHam on account of her amazing climbing abilities.

She is in what Pets at Home called a large hamster cage which we've since realised is too small and the wheel was too small. I'm nearly finished building a new larger cage for her. I'm going to put an acrylic sheet on the inside of the front frame, then seal all the joints in the box with aquarium mastic. I've attached a photo of the new home and my son's photo of SpiderHam sitting on my hand.

Until the new home is ready, we get her out in a playpen every day and we've got a much larger wheel, but it doesn't fit in the old cage. The playpen was also not hamster proof and Spidey can practically run up the sides into our hands. We've had her for about a month and seems quite tame already and wasn't even difficult to tame.

Hi and welcome to the forum! Pippin is extremely cute and sounds wonderful. I'm sorry that her original wheel and cage were too small, but her new DIY cage looks great. I'm sure she will enjoy her new palace. I look forward to getting to know Pippin and seeing more pics of her. I hope your son and Pippin have many memorable years together. See you around the forum.
