hi everyone!
hi everyone! im michelle! im kind of a first time hammy owner! 😲
i just got kupo last weekend and i am in love! she is so fluffy and cute and precious. she's a long-haired, sandy colored potato and when she runs around sometimes she gets tp stuck to her tufts. it's quite funny. she loves sand! i have a shallow tray with sand, but next weekend i'll try to find her a deeper dish because it seems like she really loves to dig in it. she doesn't seem to be picky about food either. she also loves drinking water from a bowl. watching her take little sips just kills me. 😫💖
but, um... i do have one problem and i'm hoping you guys might have some input for me. my boyfriend and i thought it would be an amazing idea to get her one of those extendy-bendy tube things. we buried it under some bedding and it was awesome!!! at first. but now she's made it her home!! i guess it's not a huge problem except now i feel like i can't really clean it without destroying everything she's done.
and an even bigger problem is we plopped an alligator whimzee down for her and to our surprise she dragged the thing from across the cage into her tunnel. now i'm not sure if she's scarfing that whole thing down or what! it's making me a little worried. is it ok to leave the whimzee? should i take the tunnel out right now or will it just upset her? like i said, i just brought her home on saturday.
anyways, thanks for reading! i hope to get to know you guys and your ham hams more in the future! 🐹
like i said, potato:

Re: hi everyone!
Those bendy tubes can get quite gross and humid with a ham nesting in them, so I would recommend removing it eventually. However, let her settle for a few weeks before doing so. She’ll be fine if the whimzee is left in
Welcome to HC! Enjoy your stay!

Re: hi everyone!
Welcome to HC & congrats on getting kupo
It would be best to remove the tube for now, you could try putting it back once she's established a better nesting area but tubes & new hams generally aren't a good idea as they do often choose to sleep, eat, pee & poo in there & it gets very unhealthy very quickly.
It's ok to leave the whimzee in, unless it's got peed on if her tube is a mess then you might want to replace it with another but if not it's fine.

Re: hi everyone!
@Drago @cypher
thanks for the advice! so i actually just went ahead and removed it the day after i posted this thread because she was spending a lot of time in there and i figured it was probably getting really nasty in there.
it ended up being the best idea because i was getting nervous i might not be able to see if she is hurt or sick or something. she was totally fine with it, i just left some of her old nesting and gave her a lot of other hiding options. and actually after removing the bendy tube i noticed the next morning that she learned how to use her litterbox.
i cleaned out the tube and i will probably only use it for play time.
@BubbyandHamper
her name is kupo and she really is a little potato!
@Nadia
thank you!! she is. she melts my heart!
thanks everyone for your welcome wishes!
here's another ham tax

Re: hi everyone!
Awww Kupo is so cute! She has such adorable big ears . Can't wait to hear more about her! You definitely did the right thing removing the tube, those things are great but some hams are persistent tube-nest-makers haha... it's not the best. Just using it for playtime sounds like a good idea!

Re: hi everyone!
Hi and welcome to HC! Kupo is really adorable, and I totally love her huge ears and "oh so sweet" expression. I think you made the right decision to only use the extendable tube for playtime. I look forward to getting to know your darling, little one and seeing more pics after she settles in more. See you around on the forum!!!
